The following is a paraphrase of The Shootist:

Defense Attorney: And how did you back away from the body?

The Duke: By going backwards. I did't know there was another way to 'back away'.

Correction. That paraphrase was from True Grit

He appeals to people of all ages. My daughter (now 18) has loved his films for years.

True Grit

Defense Attorney: Was your pistol loaded and cocked?

The Duke: A cocked pistol that's not loaded ain't good for much.

I'd have to put True Grit up there with The Searchers, Liberty Valance, The Quiet Man, and Fort Apache as Wayne's greatest. But I have a hard time naming a John Wayne movie I don't like.

Here's another paraphrase of which you may have the exact line. It's from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and it has to do with a measley little steak:

DUKE: No, Liberty. I said you. I want you to pick it up.

Yes, but not my personal favorite..you can guess which one ;^)

BTW, wasn't Rooster Cogburn the movie with the "mud" fight with Hepburn and others...???

"Rooster Cogburn" was a sequel to "True Grit" but I believe you are thinking of "McClintock" with Maureen O'Hara.

They Were Expendable, In Harms Way, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Longest Day...great movies! My all time pesonal favorite would have to be The Alamo. Watch it every year.

(upon seeing a rat skulking in the corner, as he sights in on the creature with his pistol):

"Well I've got a writ for you, rat. It's a rat writ writ for a rat. And this is lawful service of same."

Its probably out of print now, but "John Wayne - American" by Randy Roberts and James S. Olson is a treasure trove of Duke stories.

And people say you're dumber than a post! HA! Says I, don't you believe it.. You're every bit the intellectual equal of any post I've ever seen...and smarter than (at least)2/3s of them.
