Re #21
If there is ever a military conflict in Iran, it will be SpecOps war. Even that can come only after mullahs inflict serious civilian casualties.
The trick is to keep the momentum of uprising alive and growing while not hastily jumping in with blazing guns. Helping Iranian exiles to go inside Iran and organize members of opposition for effective resistance is probably the best way.

I hear that the protests are fizzling out. Is that true? That's a lot of wishful thinking on the part of the mass media.
The last thing they and the Arab world want is a Iranian student uprising that deposes the mullahs. During and afterward, there would have to be the obligitory news retrospectives about the Iranian hostages and the 444 days of Democratic foreign policy incompetance and military leadership impotence at the time that they are ginning up the public for the 2004 Democratic presidential candidates.
Some in the electorate may remember just who was President at the time and decide that you just cannot trust Democrats with the really important issues affecting the US and the world. As if 9/11 and Iraq didn't already firmly establish that precedent, the Left, the media and the rest of the world don't want to provide any more supporting evidence to that claim.

Cries of "Freedom, Freedom" answered by knives, clubs and chains
SMCCDI (Information Service)
June 19, 2003
More security forces entered in action, in several area of Tehran, in order to desperately extingush
the cries of "Fredom, Freedom" shouted by the Iranian protesters.
Knives, Clubs and Chains were used against women, men, young and elder resulting in tens of more injured.
Tens of cars were dammaged by the security forces angered by this new tactic of forming traffic jam to slow their move.
The regime forces seem to have found more boost in their repressive actions as even, the so called "reformist" President Khatami gave them the Green Light for more repression when he qualified the huge demonstrations of the last 9 nights as the work of few acting following an American conspiracy.
The protsets will go more stronger this evening.

Shocking Silence (The left on Iran)
frontpagemag/Salon.com ^ | June 19, 2003 | Andrew Sullivan
Posted on 06/19/2003 5:49 AM PDT by SJackson
Here is an excerpt of an excellent post...
"Could anyone on the left actually sympathize with the sexist, homophobic, anti-Semitic theocrats in Tehran? Of course not. But it seems that many of them hate the American right more than they hate foreign tyranny. A revolution in Iran might serve to cast a better light on President Bush's Middle East policy -- and that's so terrible a possibility that some leftists simply prefer to look the other way. Lefty blogger Matthew Yglesias let it slip that "these stories about the Iranian student movement have been so relentless hyped on rightwing sites that I think we on the left have been shying away from the story." That's an excuse? Mercifully for Yglesias, it isn't."
