I have reflected a great deal over the years about the need for dialogue and unity among various minority and progressive communities. The presidential primary process is underway, and this is the time when the candidates within the Democratic party work to differentiate themselves from one other. It is important, however, to keep in mind that the end goal for all of us is to elect a Democratic president who will work to provide a decent education for the most underprivileged children, pass tax cuts for the lower and middle classes rather than the wealthy, protect the environment and a woman’s reproductive choice ... Afterall, why should wealthy people such as myself receive a tax cut? I will be the first to admit that I don’t need it. What we all need is a healthy government that can provide the services (such as education, health care, national and homeland security) that we all depend on. We must unify and work together in order to accomplish this.
Republicans have held onto their power because they have been able to consolidate many different conservative movements into a single agenda. The Democratic Party’s broad vision has allowed for more individuality amongst progressive movements, but we all must work together for the next election. There is power in our numbers.
I see people trying to divide the unity of Blacks and Jews, in particular. We can’t allow this to happen, because we have too much in common to be divided. With a shared history of oppression and slavery, as well as a common ingrained culture of social justice, Blacks and Jews, over the years and still today, have been natural allies.
In fact, Blacks and Jews have a long and important history of working together. African-Americans and Jews came together to form the NAACP, the Urban League and to improve education in the South. African-American battalions helped liberate the concentration camps during World War II. One-third of the Civil Rights Movement supporters were Jewish. In Mississippi in 1964, three young men, one African-American and two Jewish, were killed by white extremists on their way to investigate the burning of a black church.
More recently, Blacks and Jews worked together in Florida after the 2000 election when both groups were disenfranchised after their votes were disregarded – Blacks because they were wrongly purged from voter lists and Jews in Palm Beach County who had mistakenly voted for Buchanan due to a poorly designed ballot. It was wonderful to watch Jews and African-Americans come together at rallies during that important time in our history.
In my mind, no one image better illustrates the power that is possible when African-Americans and Jews work together than the famous picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. walking through the streets of Selma, Alabama, arm in arm with his friend and fellow civil rights activist, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Rabbi Heschel and Dr. King together spoke of a moral responsibility that transcends race and religion. They taught us that we must stand together to defeat racism and anti-Semitism.
Now is the time in history when Blacks and Jews, along with Latinos, Asians, Women, Gays and all “others” have the potential to work together. Together we can eradicate not only racism, sexism, anti-Semitism and homophobia, but also the poverty, corruption in government, destruction to our environment, corporate control, undermining of our civil liberties and a woman’s right to choose, and ongoing warfare that threaten us all. Now is the time to unite.

Not to downplay African-American contributions in WWII, but IIRC there were no all black ground combat units in WWII. I think she's refering to the "Red Ball Express" that used mostly black drivers and did great work in moving supplies everywhere during the war including major support for the camps once they were liberated. She's trying to make people think of the movie "Glory".
Why doesn't she boast of the wonderful Civil Rights Bill voting record of the Democrats in 1964? A greater percentage of Republicans voted for it (82% of Republicans to 69% of Democrats) and Senator Al Gore Senior and Senator Robert KKK Byrd voted against it. And Republicans had to stop the Democrat filibuster.

Here's yet another thing that's bugging me about the Democrats' [2000] convention. It's that the Democrats think that they're the only ones that stand for or believe in civil rights.
The claim has always bothered me. In 1957, Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican president, used his federal power to integrate the Little Rock school system. He stood up to a Democratic Governor, Orville Faubus, who, incidentally, Clinton befriended early in his political career.
Democrats claim that The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is their act. It isn't. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed with an overwhelming majority of Republican votes in the Senate. A greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the bill.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which the Democrats claim as their monopoly, was opposed by southern Democrat senators, several of whom were outspoken segregationists, and one of them was Al Gore's father.
Lyndon Johnson, who was president, had to rely on Everett Dirkson, the great Republican leader from Illinois, to get the Civil Rights Act passed just like Clinton had to rely on Republicans to get NAFTA passed. It was the Democrats back in 1964 who were at war with themselves and conflicted over civil rights.
The idea that the Democrats are responsible for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a myth that has been given life by the Democrats and the media for 36 years now. It's hokum. It's grating on me as much as the idea that the Republicans want dirty water and dirty air.
The liberals are living a lie. They're telling themselves these lies in order to make themselves feel good at their convention, but it isn't flying and the poll numbers show it.

She doesn't seem upset about the discarding of the military ballots (the disputed ballots were not included in the final tally). She must agree with Clinton/Gore: "I loathe the military vote".
I guess as a white heterosexual male, I must be one of the generic "others" she speaks of. I hope she never takes a whip to me like she did to Indiana Jones in some outtake footage that the public will never be permitted to see (she's using the whip in a limp backhanded motion so as not to really hurt Harrison Ford - she makes the comment that she feels like such a f*ggot doing it that way).

Trillions of dollars in a war on poverty hasn't squashed poverty yet. We take in the world's poor unskilled worker. We will always have poor people (maybe not the same people, but there will always be someone who comes here with nothing).
We did a lot to end corruption in government (and make us safer from international warfare) when we got the Rats out of the White House.
Is the right to a fair trial over sexual harassment a civil rights issue? What if the defendent commits perjury? Is sexual harassment "just about sex" or a "private matter"? What about serial rape?
