DSL or cable? What's your choice??

I think cable is worth money, personally.... I am paying $45, but I wouldn't be without it... my phone lines give me about 19K.

What kind of wireless network do you use? I have a linksys and can't get it to work beyond 40 feet!!! Even with their booster which did absolutely nothing for 100 dollars !!!

We have cable and it has been great. It has changed companies three times now, from Media One to ATT,and now it is comcast. Fast, efficient, and I wouldn't go back to dial up ever again!

But to admit to still using AOL in public is truly a cry for help.

Judging by what my peers here on FReep say, I'd guess you're correct - but, for whatever dumb luck is involved, I get as close to zero as you can get, in the way of spam...maybe one unknown sender every two months or so. I gather, from the angst shown by the techies here (I'm a Kindergartner, computer-wise)this is worth at least two points.

It depends on where you live - there is no single right answer.

My parents have a cable modem, and they live in a suburban neighborhood with not many homes. The download speeds are unbelievably fast, and for the last three years, there has never been an outage that I've known about.

I, on the other hand, live in a densely populated student area. I had a cable modem for 6 months, and it was hell. Download speeds plunged at night, and the connection cut out on a regular basis because the company was over-amplifying their signal. So I switched to DSL.

SBC DSL has worked out great. I'm 500 feet from the CO, so the connection is fast and strong. Plus, the minimum bandwidth means that I can actually download large files between the hours of 6pm-1am.

If I recall correctly, SBC has a $29.95 a month deal right now for their slowest speed DSL provided you sign a 12 month agreement. But you've made the first good decision -- get away from dialup!

I got DSL because it was cheaper than cable. $29.99 vs $44.95

Also, the cable terms of service prohibited networking the connection. If you want to network it is an additional $15 per month. DSL had no restrictions on networking.

On the other hand, cable is much, much, much, much faster. 384kbps vs 2mbps. I could get a 1.5 mbps DSL, but it isn't worth the extra money to me. If I needed the extra speed, cable would be cheaper than DSL, but there is still the networking restriction.

I have had no outages with either Cable or DSL and installation was equally easy.

I've had both. DSL speed varies greatly depending on how far you are from the telco office. I was downtown and got 1.5 Mbits/sec regularly. Very reliable, no complaints.

When I moved I couldn't get DSL, so switched to RoadRunner cable. Even better -- sometimes got 2.5 MBits/sec at night. Also very reliable.

Moved again, got Comcast cable. Fast enough, but frequent DNS outages for several minutes at a time... makes web use impossible. Same complaint as above re email... sometimes times out without getting messages. Many more routing problems. Sometimes cannot get to sites in certain areas of the country. This hardly ever happened with RoadRunner or the PacBell DSL.

Cable all the way. Was on RoadRunner for three years @ $45/month and never a problem. After I moved into a new home across town, got Wide Open West cable @ $35/month and it's been excellent.

I'm on cable and happy as a clam, after being on a 22KBPS rotten phone line.

I tried your link and it told me that I have over 8MBPS download and over 1 MBPS upload. I don't believe that, but I'll not argue. It's sure better than 22KBPS.

However, in the two years I've been on cable, I've had to replace my Network Interface Card twice. DSL is not an option in my neck of the woods, and never will be.

I want to switch from earthlink dsl to verizon but they are saying I'm going to have to get disconnected first and have a period of downtime, up to 2 weeks. Is there any way to get around that?
