AUBURN, Maine (AP) A former state representative and candidate for governor is joining with a number of bar owners in an effort to overturn a new law that would ban smoking in bars and pool halls.

John Michael of Auburn has notified the Secretary of State's office of his intent to launch a ''people's veto,'' an attempt to get voters to overturn the law in a referendum.

Sorry I haven't been around lately. Summer time and all. Hope everyone is doing well.

Finally, people are starting to stand up for their personal freedoms and rights. I understand that Denver shot down the smoking ban as well. This is a wonderful stand for personal freedoms!

These are the same "do gooder" types that brought around prohibition. They were even idiotic enough to make it a constitutional amendment.

This is nothing more than "legal prohibition". Now some of these Do-Gooders also promote abortion, I'm sure. You figure it out!!

It's good to see this happening.

The opposition to the smoking ban in Delaware is also gaining much momentum, including at least one bar owner who is planning to run for office next year.

I wish you success in your defense of individual property rights.

In NY, the state is reacting to bar owners fighting the smoking ban by issuing public service announcements about how GOOD the ban will be for you. The announcements are LADEN with numbers which they claim are statistics...though none of them are based in any scientific study. As with all leftists, they feel that an Orwellian misinformation campaign to the public will make the masses settle down and allow the state to "care for them". After all, it's for "the children". The worst part is that in NY, it just might work.

John Michael was the only honest candidate for governor, was quite outspoken and therefore branded a nutjob.

I like the guy.

I'd much rather have these laws overturned on legal and constitutional grounds, because whether the referendum passes or fails, it is still other people passing on what a property owner can or cannot do on his/her property.

Hi SheLion. I see you're in Limestone. I'm going to be in your neck of the woods in August for the Phish festival. I went in '98 and was very impresses with how nice all of the locals were.

"''I just don't understand why certain types of people decide their morality needs to be pushed on everyone else in the world. We have enough government intervention in this country,''"

I don't understand it either. What's even more puzzling is that many of these types would encourage the legalization of marijuana and other drugs.

I think that we need to let private businesses police themselves and if others don't like what goes on at that business, then go elsewhere.

People are fed up, Gabz! We used to look upon our lawmakers as "little gods," but now we all see that they are no better then the rest of us. They just ran for office. We could have done the same thing.

But they sit "on the hill" and hand down bills and laws to govern our lives, and with each bill and law, a little more of our personal freedoms are being taken away. I am sick of it. And I see that a LOT of people are SICK OF IT.

HEY GUV DAVIS.......FIND A NEW JOB YET?

New York is so damn liberal. Have you been listening to Ann Coulter and her new book? She tells it like it is when it comes to libs.

Have you heard of ONE Maine lawmaker that helped invest in anyone's business? I sure haven't. Pity that the lawmakers think they have a legal right to RUN the businesses, eh?

Oh! No kidding! Well, the base is a 4 minute drive from me on a good day, that's how close I am. But I am off of the beaten path, so I don't see the parade of vehicles going to the concert.

The concert is great for Aroostook economy, however, the vendors around here are rather hurt, because Phish is bringing their own food vendors. I guess they found out how much money was to be made, and they want to get in on the action.

I just hope that our vendors make out well. That's the name of the game: pump money into our hurting economy.

Hope you have a super time and be safe!

I caught her interview with Hannity the other day. She was GREAT. He had to hold her segment over for 15 minutes because so many calls were coming in for her. And yes, she has the leftists pegged. NY has really gone to the dogs 9my apologies to the dogs) and Pataki has turned into a Grey Davis mini-me. Sickening.

I was watching Hannity and Combs last night, and Fox hired on as a commentator, Dennis Miller, the comedian? Well, he is irate over the treatment the smokers are getting from the Government. He said that he wants to help smokers live longer because if it wasn't for the smokers, there wouldn't be any money for all those programs!

I used to love Pataki. But your right! He has really shown his true colors over the past 6 months. Right now, I can't stand him, either. They think they should be able to do and say whatever they want, and we the "little people" should bow down. Well, he too can kiss my arse!

Wow, he really nailed it there. After they lose the taxes from cigarettes, the "fat tax" will be in effect...and after they lose the income from the "fat tax", they'll tax caffeine or something like that....and on and on until the US will be like Germany and none of us can afford to live here anymore.

WHAT ABOUT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

I keep saying if smoking is so bad for us, ban the damn stuff and be done with it. But......that would really throw us into a Civil War. I can't imagine me or any one who loves to smoke not being able to buy tobacco products. Can you? hehe!

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. LOL!
