CNS News In contrast to the official optimism, Russian media have been speculating about possible military involvement in Korea should another war erupt. "Russia's best response to a possible nuclear conflict on the Korean Peninsula would be a preemptive missile strike against North Korean nuclear facilities, carried out by the Russian Pacific Fleet," the country's leading daily, Izvestia, opined Thursday.
It quoted Pacific Fleet sources as saying the nuclear facilities could be destroyed using cruise missiles launched from a Russian cruiser.
Izvestia even considered the likely fallout in the event of a nuclear explosion in Korea, quoting a meteorologist as saying there would be a 70 percent chance a radioactive cloud would reach Russia's southeastern Primorie region within two to three hours.
Russian officials have also been warning of the risks ahead, with Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov saying that a deteriorating situation in Korea would "jeopardize regional security."
Last week, the official Russian Information Agency Novosti claimed that North Korea plans to declare itself a nuclear power on September 9, a holiday in that country. There has been no confirmation of this from North Korea.

It will also solve our balance of trade and employment outsourcing issues.
This plan sounds like a keeper! ;)

Russia intends to stop an imminent NK/SK war from getting underway... that's why it's called pre-emption.A pre-emptive strike is one while there is a long term threat. This article basically says Russia will strike if it percieves that Korea is about tp commence a nuclear atttack. Big difference between that and the Bush doctrine.

Rich irony.
The original source and propagating power behind communism, now repentant and reformed, destroys its own progeny and one time staunch ally.

Complicated issue. Did Russia clear this with China? And what will China's reaction be if they failed to tell them? The attention is what he wanted, and a promise from the US not to attack and send him food, drink, and the newest action videos. So he may have anticipated Russia's reaction and factored this into his overall plan.

Yes. But nuclear is definitely safer (for the Russians)

nuclear is definitely safer I don't see how it would be safer, and it would be immorality on stilts. It would be the end of Russia as a recovering communist country, they would be come a pariah among nations forever.

Well, he wants to nuke someone, so it might as well be North Korea. He knows we would shoot back.

I wouldn't count on the Russkies having the nerve to do it. Or their military being able to get the job done.

You've got to be kidding. The Russians have plenty of nerve. If they do something,I am also sure they will clear it with China & the US. And their military is certainly capable of taking out a pipsqueak country like N. Korea, especially since the Russians are not hampered by any political correct attitude that "no civilians should be harmed". They'll let the chips -- or weapons -- fall where they may.
