"I certainly don't want to see Teddy Kennedy in a Navy flight suit."

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay used that image in a speech last week as he accused Democrats of a lack of leadership on national security. His joke at the expense of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., touched off a verbal war Friday.

"Served in the Army? I thought he was in the Navy, in the Silent Service"

I dont know about todays Silent Service, but in the era I served in, he would have taken a lot of falls down a ladder or two, or three, or four.

We didnt put up with pansies.

After his expulsion from Harvard, Teddy returned to Hyannis Port where he would sit brooding, sometimes for hours.
- Finally, he enlisted in the Army.
- Not surprisingly, he did not bother to read the enlistment papers and signed up for four years instead of two.
- Ted's father, the US Ambassador to England, was horrofied at the thought of his youngest son spending four years in the service, with a good chance of being sent into combat in Korea.
- "Don't you ever look at what you're signing?" he shouted.

- With one phone call Joe contacted a friend who managed to get hold of Teddy's enlistment papers.
- Ted's enlistment period was shortened to two years, a maneuver that was nearly impossible for the average enlistee.
- Furthermore, Ted would do his service in Europe, not Korea.

Geez...I am sooooo glad he wasnt a submariner. One dud is enough for us ( Jimmy Carter). Another would probably wash up all the wonderful achievements of the last century and mark us for decommissioning.

"Former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, also a Democrat and Vietnam veteran, chastised DeLay in a letter Friday for his "tasteless and unnecessary smear of Senator Kennedy."

Isn't this the same Bob Kerry that in the vote on the Clintoooon Budget and Tax increase of 1993 said that, "This Budget is bad for the American people, but I will not give my vote to the other side of the aisle to BRING DOWN MY PRESIDENT?"

He left that task to Monica!

By voting for the Budget and Tax Increase, he set up the tie vote that allowed Al Bore to cast the deciding vote!

Bush should do more flights- that was the greatest thing I ever saw in the military in my life (not combat related)

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, also a Democrat and Vietnam veteran, chastised DeLay in a letter Friday for his "tasteless and unnecessary smear of Senator Kennedy."

How could anything said of Ole Kennedy be tasteless, unnecessary or a smear? If John and Bobby were alive they'd probably say worse.

Democrats take themselves WAY too seriously to ever be able to laugh at themselves. Jerks.

My own favorite "Kennedy moment" - during the Clarence Thomas / Anita Hill hearings - after the Judiciary committee meetings were done and the full Senate was debating just before taking the final vote ---

[Teddy]: "Shame on you! [referring to GOP Senators on Judiciary Comm.] Shame! Shame on you for the way you treated that poor woman." [i.e. for cross examining Anita Hill and not automaticaly accepting her testimony at 100% full face value]

[Orrin Hatch]: "First of all, we Republicans don't need lectures on ethics from the Senator from Massachusetts. Secondly, if anyone out there thinks that it's Republicans who treat women badly, I've got a bridge in Massachusetts I'd like to sell them!"

I wouldn't mind him in a "flight suit" as long as it was orange and being shot at while trying to get over the fence!

Kennedy spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the incident was "another missed opportunity for DeLay to set a good example in front of an audience of young people rather than promote the politics of personal destruction."

Speaking of personal destruction . . .

Senator Teddy, wearing his controversial neck brace, leaves St. Vincent's
Church with his wife, Joan, after the funeral Mass for Mary Jo Kopechne.

You are correct.
