WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Nutritionists are urging the top 10 U.S. hospitals to ban the Atkins diet, reports said Friday.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine announced Friday in Washington it hopes the hospitals will emulate England's Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is eliminating the controversial diet from its menus, fearing a link to kidney damage.

That's good news! Thanks. Apperntly hard liquor is OK too in moderation. You just have to watch what you mix it with.

Healthy, active people just aren't going to keep the pharmacutical business going.

Excellent point. Follow the money. Healthy people are bad for business.

Good morning dear girl, I'll try to post a few more a little later in the weekend. I have a mountain of work to do this beautiful day. But knowing women as well as I do..(NOT!), I thought you might enjoy this bad girl..  :o)
Smooze the Chocolate Mousse

If you haven't tried Dried egg whites, which are great for people who are uncomfortable using raw eggs, were once available only to professional kitchens. Now they can be found in the baking section of most grocery stores.

  • 4 Carob Candy Bars, coarsely chopped *
  • 3 tablespoons dried egg whites, or 2 Real eggs,  will work just fine..wanted to freak you out..ha!
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, divided
  • 2 tablespoons granular sugar substitute
  • 1 Carob Chocolate Candy Bar, frozen (I can make metric available if you require)
1. Melt 4 chocolate candy bars in a double boiler. Cool to room temperature.
2. While chocolate is cooling, whisk dried egg whites and water 2 minutes, until whites are thoroughly dissolved. With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat whites 3 minutes, until stiff peaks form; set aside.
3. Mix cocoa with ¼ cup of the cream until smooth. Stir cocoa mixture into chocolate.
4. With an electric mixer, beat remaining 1¼ cups cream with sugar substitute. Set aside 1 cup of whipped cream; fold remaining whipped cream into chocolate mixture.
5. In three additions, fold egg whites into chocolate-cream mixture. Divide among dessert glasses. Pipe reserved whipped cream on top of mousse. With a vegetable peeler, shave thin pieces from frozen chocolate candy bar. Sprinkle over whipped cream.
*carob confections, often found in health-food stores. Although carob powder is lower in fat and naturally sweeter than cocoa powder, fat is added to turn carob powder into candy, so its total fat and calorie counts are usually the same as in chocolate. The difference: The cocoa butter added to chocolate bars is rich in stearic acid (a saturated fat which has been shown not to raise blood cholesterol levels), while any type of fat may be added to carob -- including artery-clogging palm kernel oil and coconut oil.

"Well, what are they going to do, send out the Meat Police? Monitor how many vegetables we eat?

Well if they take the typical government approach. We will all have to keep logs of everything we eat to document that we aren't on the Atkin's diet. Then we will have to save our Grocery Receipts. Our refrigerators and meal-times will be subject to surprise audits.

There, of course will be a hotline where anyone with a grudge against you can start an investigation of you where the burden of proof is on you, by anonymously reporting that they saw you ate at Western Sizzlin.

That won't be sufficient though. Eventually you will have to choose a diet plan. People will object because not everyone needs to diet. Two years later they will make us chooose a "meal plan" to avoid the stigma of the word "diet".

Then they will find a couple of examples where people chose inappropriate diets. So our choice of meal plans will now have to be approved by either a Doctor or a registered dietician.

If you have a blood test and the results are inconsistent with the meal plan that you are on, you will be subject to further investigation.

Of course they will go after the distributors. Grocery stores will be required to report purchases, so that the Feds can zero in on communities that aren't following the meal plans.

The low fat (high carb) diets will cause more obesity, diabeties, heart disease and vitamin deficiency. So the government will react by vigorously prosecuting those whose weight gain and symptons don't match what the government perceives the results of low fat diets should be.

Maybe we need to put the government on a diet before it puts us on one.

This is a wonderful little keeper..  You are going to have to get a sugar-free syrup eventually, these are 2 that I think are better than most.

Amaretto Chicken Strips Kabobs

You can keep these delicious snacks  in the fridge for up to a week. For a tasty lunch, serve five or six over dressed salad greens.

Heavenly Low Carb Cheesecake

Heavenly,  because it's out of this world... promise..... really..... trust me on this.... ;)

  • 5 packages (8 oz ea.) cream cheese (must be at room temperature)
  • 5 large eggs (must also be at room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup Splenda
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
Preheat oven to 350.
1) Spray a spring-form pan (they are easy to find, and great for cookies, so get one if you don't have one yet..:o)) with a non-stick spray.
2) In a large mixing bowl,  beat the eggs, cream, sweetener, and extract.
3) Add cream cheese in 2 oz chunks for easier beating, making sure to get all of the lumps out..
4) Pour into the pan and bake for 50 to 55 minutes. You must be careful to cook this all the way through.. test with toothpick. Chill completely, or leave in the fridge overnight, it is much better the next day anyway..
Guess what, only 9 carbohydrates per piece.
12 pieces per pie
Add whipped cream topping and/or any kind of berries..or nothing at all...yummmmm

I'll bet your BP and cholesterol are down too. How are docs and pharmacy companies to make any money if they are not treating you on a regular basis?

I broke down and saw a doctor about three weeks ago (I hate going to doctors) because I thought I was passing a kidney stone. I had a recurring pain in my kidney area. I got a ultrasound and they couldn't find a thing. But I did do some research on my own and decided to drink a lot more plain water (now averaging a gallon a day). It kept me running to the bathroom the first few days but my body has adjusted and I feel great. No more instances of kidney pain.

But the most encouraging sign was that my blood pressure was perfect. I had never had perfect blood pressure before. Everytime I had it taken, the nurse would always say it was "a little high", usually with a frown on her face. My cholesterol is at 183. Wish I knew what it was before but I can't remember. I don't have the overall results in front of me but every result from the blood work (glucose, triglyceride, liver function, etc.) was within the normal range. I am as healthy as can be and feel that way too.

Nevertheless, the doctor has scheduled a followup appointment with an urologist on Sept. 11 just to check things out further with respect to my kidneys.

I am a fan for life. No more heartburn. I feel great. People even say I look 10 years younger..........(one of these days we should post before and after pictures)

Same here. People who haven't seen me in a while are thrown into shock when they see me. It's fun. My face is lean and tanned (used to be puffy with multiple chins) and I am getting thin all over, not just losing the gut. There is something to be said for being in shape. You move better, you look better and younger. People tell me that there is a certain "glow" about me. I think this is the main reason my wife is starting the same program. She started going low carb about three weeks ago and she is already down 10 pounds herself.

I'm 40 currently but before this plan, I could have easily passed for 45. Now I look 30. No kidding. What's more important, I feel like I'm a kid again. I've got tons of energy and I bound up and down stairs like a kid in high school. My morning walks often get extended when I have the time because I'm not in the mood for stopping. I love walking through the woods and climbing up on rocks and things. I do things I haven't been able to physically do for years. For example, when I am in a swimming pool, I can pull myself out without using the ladder or steps. I just grab the side of the pool and hoist myself up like my two kids can do, even when I'm in over my head. Just last Sunday, we were swimming in a lake and I was able to get up on the floating diving platform (which has no ladders). I was the only adult in the lake who made it up there that day. It might sound like a small thing but it made my day. There was no way I could have done that when I weighed 300 pounds and I'd look ridiculous even trying.

I do intend to post before and after pictures of myself once I get down to my target weight. There aren't that many "before" pictures of me to choose from though because I used to hate taking pictures. I'd always have that "gut" hanging over my belt and that bloated look. So I tried to ensure I was out of the picture whenever possible.

A local judge here is a firm believer in the Atkins diet. He had the first page of Atkins' Book engraved in granite and had it placed, sometime after midnignt, in the promenade of the court building.

" Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine announced Friday in Washington". Don't know if this is a Washington-based group, but it was announced "in" Washington which seems to me to make it political. In that case, the name of the organization is exactlly the opposite of what it intends to do. Suggesting we adopt a "foreign" hospital policy (socialised medicine) is suspicious. I guess since meat costs more than potatoes, serving more high carb foods is preferable in a socialist system.

I've done the cheesecake with 5 (8oz) cream cheese, 1 cup sour cream, vanilla, 4 lg eggs (added one at a time)and 1 C Splenda - mix with blender and pour over a cup of crushed Fiber One cereal mixed with 6oz of melted butter (and some Splenda for sweetening) pressed into the bottom of the pan. Bake for an hour, cool and refrigerate about 6 hours or overnight. So good with fresh whipped cream (using Splenda) and berries.

Other posters on this thread have said it's a Left-wing group associated with PETA. We shouldn't be surprised.

Triglycerides are decreased and HDL increased on Atkins:

A randomized trial of a low-carbohydrate diet for obesity.

Foster GD, Wyatt HR, Hill JO, McGuckin BG, Brill C, Mohammed BS, Szapary PO, Rader DJ, Edman JS, Klein S.

University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3309, USA. fosterg@mail.med.upenn.edu

N Engl J Med. 2003 May 22;348(21):2082-90.

BACKGROUND: Despite the popularity of the low-carbohydrate, high-protein, high-fat (Atkins) diet, no randomized, controlled trials have evaluated its efficacy. METHODS: We conducted a one-year, multicenter, controlled trial involving 63 obese men and women who were randomly assigned to either a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, high-fat diet or a low-calorie, high-carbohydrate, low-fat (conventional) diet. Professional contact was minimal to replicate the approach used by most dieters. RESULTS: Subjects on the low-carbohydrate diet had lost more weight than subjects on the conventional diet at 3 months (mean [+/-SD], -6.8+/-5.0 vs. -2.7+/-3.7 percent of body weight; P=0.001) and 6 months (-7.0+/-6.5 vs. -3.2+/-5.6 percent of body weight, P=0.02), but the difference at 12 months was not significant (-4.4+/-6.7 vs. -2.5+/-6.3 percent of body weight, P=0.26). After three months, no significant differences were found between the groups in total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. The increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations and the decrease in triglyceride concentrations were greater among subjects on the low-carbohydrate diet than among those on the conventional diet throughout most of the study. Both diets significantly decreased diastolic blood pressure and the insulin response to an oral glucose load. CONCLUSIONS: The low-carbohydrate diet produced a greater weight loss (absolute difference, approximately 4 percent) than did the conventional diet for the first six months, but the differences were not significant at one year. The low-carbohydrate diet was associated with a greater improvement in some risk factors for coronary heart disease. Adherence was poor and attrition was high in both groups. Longer and larger studies are required to determine the long-term safety and efficacy of low-carbohydrate, high-protein, high-fat diets. Copyright 2003 Massachusetts Medical Society

Sounds great, I'll try your method real soon, I haven't thought of Fiber One cereal. I guess I have to admit that I have to be dragged into using any of so-called Diet manufactured products as ingredients, it always makes me think of being an "easy mark". I believe I can find a way to thinker with the recipe to achieve the same results at 10% of the costs.. Hahahhaah.. Thanks

Yes...I did do it during induction but did great anyway. Perhaps it slowed things down a bit (I'll never know), but I couldn't give up my Scotch, cigar and beer when I got home from work AND give up sandwiches, hamburgers on buns, pizza and rice with my Chinese food AND remain civil.

Hello? Is anybody out there?

I just learned I have an ulcer from high acid content in my stomach - brought on by an environment of high proteins & low carbs. Plus, a close friend developed gallstones from the Atkins diet, became addicted to the pain medication, and was a basket case for about two years.

I'm just not sure how much long-term health can be maintained on a diet of meat, eggs & cheese, void of fruits and vegetables.
