Government scientific advisers and officials painted a grim picture Thursday of the consequences of a terror attack on the nation's power grid, saying that any outage that lasted longer than a couple of days would reduce urban centers to chaos and collapse the economy.

Maybe what we ought to do every few years is pick the most annoying country out there and pound the stuffing out of it, just so the rest of the world understands not to mess with Daddy.A country a year - that's all we ask...

Every large generator station has one or more large, oil filled transformers. One mortar round, or several .50 BMG rounds with tracers and you have a hell of a fire. The wait for large transformers, years, not days, not months. If a select number of big stations were attacked in this manner, we would be in the dark for a long time. Industrial users would be out of luck. The effects on the economy would be hugh, and series.
