"Fowler talks over the rhythmic whir of a giant laminator about how he wanted to require an associate's degree for the people who operate it. The union blocked that move"

The dumb and ignorant are union's best friends. G-d forbid people try to better themselves!

Refrigeration manufacturer creates new jobs in Oklahoma due to SC purchase

(Pryor, Oklahoma-AP) Aug. 28, 2003 - A company that makes refrigeration equipment and systems plans to create 150 jobs in Oklahoma.

RAE Corporation says the new jobs will be created as a result of its purchase of Bishopville, SC-based King Coil, another refrigeration manufacturer.

Pryor, Oklahoma-based American Cast Iron Pipe Company announced last week that it would create 150 jobs this year and about 400 more in the next three years.

RAE and American Cast Iron Pipe Company are neighbors at MidAmerica Industrial Park. The park was established in 1960 by the state government. It is now home to 70 companies.

I've been hearing BS like this my entire working life. "The demand for engineers (or whatever) will skyrocket in ten years...blablablah..."

Somehow, those jobs never seem to show up.

"Fowler looks beyond his own company, too. He participates in local workforce-development initiatives and advocates for everything from education reform to more government funding for training."

Sigh. No this guy isn't "looking beyond his company." He's probably sick and tired of wasting his own money educating his workers and wants uncle sam to foot the bill. Nice huh.

Silly us, going out and getting science and engineering degrees when the big demand is going to be in manufacturing?! Right. I don't see where this impending labor shortage is going to be a good thing if it happens at all.

Just wait until your students hit the job market and find that with all their knowledge, they will be lucky to make as much as a truck driver or the union workers changing the light bulbs in their building.

If you're a teacher, you should prepare them for this, and the fact that they will most likely be working for an idiot who makes 3 times what they will ever make.

Phenix gets 150 new jobs: Pipe insulation plant coming to old Keebler facility

At a time when area manufacturers are cutting back on employees, there are 150 new jobs coming to Phenix City.

"We are very excited," said Kathyjo Spivey, director of Phenix City's Department of Economic Development. "Johns Manville has chosen the city of Phenix City as the home of their pipe manufacturing."

The company plans to renovate the old Keebler Distribution Center at 510 Brickyard Road for production and distribution of pipe insulation used in residential and commercial buildings, a $5 million investment, she said.

"We're certainly happy and excited to be coming to Phenix City," said Rick Versen, a Johns Manville pipe insulation business manager. "We evaluated options for this project across the country and outside."

He said more than 50 other locations were considered before the company decided on Phenix City.

"That drives home to us that we are not just competing in a local market," said Mayor Sonny Coulter. "We're not just competing in the state of Alabama. We are competing, not just nationwide, but worldwide."

The city is planning on offering the company incentives to locate in the area. The City Council plans to vote on a resolution for tax abatement for the company at its Sept. 2 meeting.

The incentives include:

• Improving Brickyard Road.

• Providing trailers on site for training and temporary office space.

• Installing street lights.

• Loaning the company $100,000, without interest, that will be forgiven in thirds each year if at least 140 people are employed there.

"The new jobs will mean a great deal to this community," City Manager Max Wilkes told company representatives during a conference call Wednesday. "We look forward to a long relationship with your company."
