FReeper Storm Check-in (vanity)
9-19-03 | me

Posted on 09/19/2003 5:33:24 AM PDT by netmilsmom

Through the week, many of us heard of FReepers who were in the path of Isabel. I personally know Gabz, Corin Stormhands and Consitution Day were in the area. I thought it would be a good idea if we had a thread to ask if someone is ok and let them check in. Prayers to our FRiends in harms way. Thanks!

I stuck my head under the faucet, and then turned up full the fan on in my house, before I watched Fox news coverage. I love being where the action is. Gives me the same kind of goose bumps I get when I think of having an action hero as my Governor. Go Tom go!

The Richmond and Coastal areas have extensive power outages, and significant damage from downed trees. I doubt you'll be hearing from too many FReepers from that part of VA today.

I'm fine, thanks!

Here in Edgecombe County, NC [near Rocky Mount], we lost power for about 8 hrs.
Lots of limbs and leaves are down, but it's nothing that can't wait till tomorrow.

About the most exciting thing that happened was watching two power lines arcing as the wind blew them too close together.
Then I took a nap for about two hours; afterward, my dad and I cooked chicken on the grill and drank beer.

Compared to other hurricanes I've been through, this was a non-event.
It was a good excuse for a little party, though. ;)

Today I am back at work.

Email from a friend, Richmond area.(9/18/03) 8:36 pm.

Got lots of wind and rain here. The winds are running round 60 mph and I have two, one hundred foot oak trees down in the back yard now. Both fell on the fence and not the house. The roads are all blocked around here and it took me two hours to go less than 10 miles to get back to the emergency center where I was standing by to do communications. MAN has the wind blown and it's supposed to get a little worse before it passes. The rain has slowed up a lot, but the wind is still here.

Everything is down, power, cable, phones etc. over about 90% of the county....last I heard 600,000 without power.

First I read your reply:

same kind of goose bumps I get when I think of having an action hero as my Governor.
Go Tom go!

Then I read your tagline:

Without massive intervention from Heaven, America doesn't have a prayer.

Then I laughed hoping that some of that massive intervention is at your home. LOL!

I lost some shingles from my roof, but luckily it's not supposed to rain this weekend. Power was out for 30 min one time, then about 1 hr. another time.

All in all, we were lucky. I'm trying to call my aunt in Atlantic, but I'm getting the "all circuits are busy". That area was one of the hardest hit. Atlantic, Sea Level, Cedar Island, Williston, Davis, Otway, Bettie, Marshallberg, etc. all had a lot of flooding.

My parents in Jacksonville are OK, though. No damage, and they didn't lose power at all.

I'm checking in briefly. We have no power and I need to re-charge the batteries on the laptop.

No power at home or here at work.

Has anyone heard from Interesting Times?

Glad to hear you and your family made it through ok. Isabel certainly wasn't anywhere near the ferocity of Fran or Floyd, thank God.

We did well here too, I HATE being w/o electricity and I'm glad we were only w/o ours for 5 whole minutes LOL.

Lots of limbs, big and small and TONS of leaf confetti plastered on the side of everything facing north. I told the boys we would definately be raking leaves this weekend even though fall isn't here yet.

Northern Chesapeake banks, Maryland: Wind still whipping around...beautiful blue sky at 7:00 this morning. Downed power lines all over the place, flooding a few miles south in Edgewood and Perryman. I understand some rescues had to be made as the Bush River flooded. Storm surge is still headed up the Chesapeake and is expected to hit this area between noon and 2 ET.

Our power was off for about 3 hours yesterday afternoon, then back on for a few, then off for a bit, then on for the rest of the night. It was off again twice this morning. Clouds are beginning to blow back in.

Local news says over 600,000 are without power, and BG&E estimates several days of outages. Water pumping station at Perryman was damaged, so residents in the area are advised to not use water. (I'm on an army post where we have our own water facilities and power generators, so we're much more fortunate than the poor folks outside the fence.)

Thank heaven the storm blew further west of us. Praying for those in the path of Isabel...she's still wreaking havoc.
