Push To Overturn Illegal Immigrant Driver License Law
Associated Press
September 19, 2003, 7:34 PM PDT
SACRAMENTO --
Opponents of a new law enabling illegal immigrants to obtain California drivers' licenses can begin collecting voter signatures to try to overturn the statute, state election officials said Friday.
The opponents need to gather valid signatures of at least 373,816 registered voters by Dec. 7 to force a referendum on the legislation, which Gov. Gray Davis signed Sept. 5.
The law allows immigrants to get around the requirement of listing a Social Security number on drivers' license forms. Social Security cards are only supposed to be issued to immigrants with work permits.
Supporters of the new law say that millions of illegal immigrants drive without licenses and that allowing them to obtain licenses will make sure they can pass a driving test and have auto insurance.
Critics contend the new law will create security problems.
A group of Republicans announced shortly after the law was approved by lawmakers that they would try to overturn it by putting it on the ballot.

I believe that this referendum will qualify for the ballot in record time, even though Arnold does not support it.

This should become a regular Free Republic Forum, it is only the beginning and will start popping up everywhere.
Bill O'Reilly just had a segment on the New Your Mayor going soft on Illegal alien issues,OPPSS I mean undocumented worker issues.

The liberal elites in Ferragamo shoes haven't seen the "perfect storm" yet. They're going to find out its a tidal wave the likes they've never seen before.

I think this whole thing is hysterical (besides scary). I just can't imagine that someone who is here illegally (supposedly they can be picked up and deported at any time) would apply for a driver's licence and give the government their names and addresses so that they can get legal auto insurance and be "responsible" illegal immigrants!!

This should become a regular Free Republic Forum Bingo - I was thinking the same thing. The Net has not only enabled the free flow of information, but it can also serve as a platform for direct democracy. While the basic principles of the republic are sound, the founders never imagined a future where an entrenched judicial/political class had a stranglehold on the will of the people.
Until we regain control of the system in Calif., this is the time and place for direct democracy. I can easily envision a public takeover of the political system for at least the next 12-18 months. The DL issue is just one of many.
My guess is that these treshold numbers used to be intimidating, but now they almost seem laughable. 400k sigs? Pisha, this thing will qualify in weeks - FR serves as an excellent forum to serve these purposes.

Are the petitions downloadable or do they have to be mailed?

Being here legally should not allow you to vote, that is for citizens.
I also believe that legal aliens (green card) should not be on the "dole" except for emergency medical treatment, that was the way it was once, along time ago. I guess the theory was if you wanted to become a citizen you first had to work and follow the rules, not get into trouble and earn your citizenship. I prefer it that way.
The illegal drivers license stuff will allow those folks to vote, don't forget the motor voter law. One politician (democrat) said no it would not allow voting "You have to swear that you are a citizen" what a jackass, the illegals that are swearing they are citizens already broke the law to get here...........

</ sigh > yes you are right. We have a governor who is in his death throws and is signing stuff for the unions, special interest and illegals like crazy. Was at a local rally/remote radio broadcast KFI640 - The John and Ken Show on Thursday to abolish the car tax completely. Three thousand people showed up that afternoon to sign those petitions. Not bad for 4 hour time slot. More petitions, more signatures...but the really neat thing in all this is the populace is aroused and fighting mad. We got this quiet war machine building against Sacramento and their ilk.

I've posted this idea before (as well as suggesting it to Tancredo).
Propose a bill that says the feds will not recognize California's DL as a valid ID. Same for those other states that blindly issue DLs to illegals.
Another course is to persude the FAA to issue the same edict as an anti-terror measure. Once all those liberals who fly get banned from a flight unless they have a valid passport or other ID, they'll scream bloody murder and demand the DL law be changed. (More likely, they will demand the FAA drop it's rule.).
Call your favorite pol and suggest they draft/support such a bill.
As far as the petition goes, watch the 9th say it's unConstitutional after it passes.

As far as the petition goes, watch the 9th say it's unConstitutional after it passes. You can bet on that. But it's still worth doing, IMO. There is no justice, and there is no justice system. The courts have become so liberalized that they bear more resemblance to the Politburo than the American justice system.
But people won't be prepared to do anything about it until they get carted off to labor camps in the dead of night. And that will be done so haphazardly that no one will notice until it is too late.
And the wheel of history continues to turn relentlessly westward.
