Chicago, Apr. 09 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Francis George of Chicago has announced that he will not deny the Eucharist to Catholic politicians who support abortion, according to an AP report.
Cardinal George reportedly said that he was considering an appropriate response to prominent Catholic political leaders who violate Church teachings on issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and euthanasia. He indicated that he is waiting for recommendations from a task force set up by the US bishops' conference to consider that problem.
The cardinal's statement was triggered by questions that have come to the fore with the emergence of Senator John Kerry as the Democratic presidential candidate. Kerry, who is a Catholic, is a stalwart supporter of legalized abortion on demand.
Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis has indicated that he would not allow Kerry to receive the Eucharist because of his flagrant and public violation of Church teachings. In Boston-- Kerry's own archdiocese-- Archbishop Sean O'Malley has indicated that politicians who flout Church teachings should not receive Communion. But the Boston archbishop has not indicated that he would deny the Eucharist to Kerry or other pro-abortion politicians.

I get the feeling that the bishops want to present a united front on this. Unfortunate, really, since they are technically autonomous.
It's time to abandon the conference. It's just not serving us well at all.

He indicated that he is waiting for recommendations from a task force set up by the US bishops' conference to consider that problem. Good grief, another task force. Can't these Bishops take a stand on anything without getting someone elses "opinion" on the matter. The question is very easy...do I want to save Senator Kerry's soul or am I more concerned about hurting his feelings? Why are these Bishops such cowards?

Father Groechel had a re-airing of his Good Friday homilies on EWTN today and he said that instead of St. Thomas More being the Patron SAint of Politicians it should be Judas to those whos support abortion.
He also came down hard on the Bishops.

In view of the annulment-on-demand culture they've created and still maintain, I suspect the legacy of St. Thomas More is more frightening to our bishops than he is to our politicians.

Not surprising since the good Cardinal basically admitted he was a "Democrat" last week. Add him to the ranks of the spineless, unfortunately.

Why are these Bishops such cowards?
Because they are empty, faithless men who have nothing to fear from Rome.
Where is the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep? Why just these hired hands? The wolves are wearing miters, and only the sheep seem to care.

It never took the Bishops long to speak out on liberal issues such as being against capital punishment.I am afraid many of the Bishops are at the heart of the Catholic Church's present problems.

It's just not serving us well at all. I don't think serving us was its purpose. It makes them feel important and provides cover when needed.

He is better than his predecessor, Bernardin. He has demanded an end to some abuses, such as Communal Penance Services not done properly.
Coming into a place like Chicago, with the bureaucrats and a good number of priests tied to the former bishop's outlooks and policies, it is difficult to be sure to change things.
Still, this seems unnecessarily "concilliatory" to the pro-aborts!! Pray for him for backbone!

TYVets, I don't know for sure, but I do not believe so. The better example of Cafeteria Catholics is John Kerry himself; perhaps you know one or two personally, say a divorcée who has remarried without an annulment?
Also, another good example as I see it, would be found in the person who reads an AP report, and then feels "justified" in their subsequent actions... those which aren't Catholic, and probably not Christian either.
