Would be nice if I knew where my own posts were. Thanks for taking the time to figure it out. I put a page on the server at that url with these propers for now just so the link here works.

Do you know if there are alternate readings for today?

I heard the guy behind me at Church mention that he thought that there were three alternatives. And Fr. didn't read the same readings that you have posted, which are the same as in my readings for the day pamphlet.

You're probably asking the wrong guy, as I was very confused today before posting this.

From what I understand, the feast for today is St. Joseph the Worker - it supercedes the normal 5th Sunday of Easter which had to do with Andrew and two other apostles. I'm not sure if this is a permanent change or just for 2005, but it seems as if this was the Mass given to everyone that I've heard from.

I realized today how little I understand about the liturgical calendar. I don't know if Mike can shed any light on this or not, but I've pinged him.

Well, here's my understanding, and if the freeper who told me once he knows quite a bit about the calendar, and whose name I've forgotten, chimes in, I'll appreciate it. (I learned from him not to go by the Fr Lasance. I think he said that in 1962, first, second, etc, feasts were abolished, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm 100% wrong about that.)

Pius XII established the May 1 Feast of St Joseph the Worker in the middle 1950s, and made it a first class feast. The Fifth Sunday After Easter is a second class feast, so St Joe takes precedence, but won't take precedence again until May 1 happens to be the Fifth Sunday After Easter.

I don't know if the simplification of things in 1962 changed any of this. In the Mass I attended today, Father said the St Joe Mass.

Mike, you are correct...

Yesterday was a first class feast which took precedence over a Second Class Sunday. The next time May 1st. happens on Sunday, it will be the same occurrence, except not necessarily on the fifth Sunday after Easter, due to the variation of the date of Easter.

The simplification of the rubrics had no effect in this case. It was simply the issue of Pius XII establishing a new feast in the calendar, which happens to be ranked first class.

Some further nuances...
If May 1st. is Ascension Thursday, St. Joseph the Worker is transferred to May 2nd.

If May 1st. is Easter Saturday or Low Sunday (first class Sunday), St. Joseph the Worker is transferred to the Monday, May 2nd. or 3rd.

Here is one reason why you can't go by the Fr. Lasance Missal or most Missals for that matter:

Prior to 1961, Sundays and Feasts were ranked as follows:
Double 1st. Class
Double 2nd. Class
Greater Double
Double
Semidouble (this was actually abolished in 1955)
Simple

Effective Jan 1, 1961, Pope John XXIII abolished the above and replaced it with:
First Class
Second Class
Third Class
Fourth Class

Furthemore, all but three Octaves and most Vigils were suppressed in 1955. Hence, the Octave of the Ascension no longer exists, for example. So, next Sunday is properly called the Sunday AFTER the Ascension, no longer the Sunday in the Octave of the Ascension.

LOL I understood that a first class would supercede any lesser ranking.

I'm not sure if that's correct. I believe I've seen second class feasts performed more than once.... but I woulnd't be sure if I were 100% wrong about that either.

See what I wrote above. The only thing that was abolished was the term "Double"...hence what used to be a "Double of the Second Class" became simply "Second Class". Some specific feasts were abolished as I have listed below. Most Missals (because they are dated before 1960), still include them.

Today, May 3rd. was the Feast of the Finding of the True Cross. In the 1962 Missal this feast no longer exists, but the Mass of this Feast may be said today as a Votive Mass.

Jan. 18th. - Chair of St. Peter in Rome - abolished. And, then the Chair of St. Peter on Feb. 22nd. became the only such feast on the calendar.

Aug. 1st. - St. Peter's Chains - abolished. Aug. 3rd. - Finding of St. Stephen - abolished.
