Code read, novel crisis looms anew

19dec05

THE Vatican, having weathered author Dan Brown's bestseller The Da Vinci Code, will now be battening down the blockbuster hatches against a new novel claiming that Pope John Paul I was assassinated.

John Paul I died of an apparent heart attack just 33 days after becoming Pope in 1978.

But Portuguese author Luis Miguel Rocha, 29, dubbed the "new Dan Brown", says he was murdered because he was aware of money laundering involving the Vatican Bank and planned to liberalise church doctrine.

Rocha says his The Last Pope is based on documents from a secret Vatican source, which he will reveal in April.

The novel depicts a conspiracy involving top financial officials, governments, and a mafia group including Vatican officials.

"He wanted to be the last wealthy pope," Rocha said. "John Paul I wanted to redistribute the riches of the church, open the church to women, and authorise contraceptives."

John Paul's death on September 28, 1978, instantly gave rise to speculation over discrepancies in the official story and over the Vatican's refusal to allow an autopsy.

He saw "the Godfather Part III", too?

So his twin remained Pope for another 27 years?

I always thought he must have died of a stroke or a heart attack after reading the Third Letter of Fatima.

Plaigarism worked for Dan Brown, it could work for him too.

This theory has been going around since at least the early 1980's, there was a book called "St. Peter's Banker" that made a very compelling argument. A lot of people agree that there is some validity to the theory, for certain there are some questions surrounding Vatican reports concerning the Pope's death.

Ditto!

Actually, I read somewhere that upon his election, JPI told them they had made a mistake and that the person they should have chosen was sitting opposite him. The individual who stumbled across this story went through the Vatican Archives to find the seating arrangements for that Papal Conclave. Sure enough, that person, sitting opposite JPI, was Carol Wotilja. Divine Providence?!

Wrong pope. You couldn't have a JP2 without a JP1

Another book on Vatican skullduggery? This is becoming a trend; seriously, this sounds less off the wall than the Dan Brown/Steve Berry books. At least this conspiracy is based on this-world thoughts such as money laundering, as opposed to otherworldly visions or visitations. Even if this work is still fiction it's more "believable" than the others. The Catholic Church is run by human beings with human failings, so it's going to have human problems. In comparison to the Brown book this might prove interesting. Just one woman's opinion.

FYI ping.

Heck, I remember hearing about JPI being murdered in the 80's! But suggesting it was because he was going to ordain women and bless latex is something new.

Published by Red Herring Press?

Very convenient that progressive liberalism is the martyr of this work of fiction.
Sounds like disinformation. There are conspiracies targeting the Vatican but they
have quite different goals. The author seems to have gotten the story ass backwards.
Does he suggest Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone delivering the poison? [irony]

I believe that the Pope's family thought that he might have been assassinated. Given the history of the Vatican and Italian clan rivalries it is plausible. But why? That's another question. I recall someone claiming that it was because he was going to roll back the liberalization of Vatican II and the progressives wouldn't allow it. Whatever.
As far as Oswald was concerned, I find it funny that the first findings pointed out his connection to communism but twenty-five years later and Oliver Stone morphs it into a right-wing conspiracy.
Again, whatever.

"John Paul I wanted to redistribute the riches of the church,

*The lawyers are accomplishing that

open the church to women,

*It's already open to them. Somebody's got to vacuum

and authorise contraceptives."

* After he had purchased a ton of Trojans stock. I think the Abstinece Only Cabal, "Big Chastity", is the institution which backed the plot to bump-off da Pope. Their "Abstinence" scam is a costly rip-off that would have been a bust (sorry for the pun) once the Pope approved fornication and rubbers and whatnot

*Also,I have conclusive proof that Uri Geller bent the author's mind and is totally controlling him and is going to reveal all of this on a 60 Minutes Speical guest-hosted by Kreskin.
