Pro-Life Activists Applaud Bishops' Statement Against Contraception

The Pro-Life Action League applauded the American Catholic bishops today for reiterating the Catholic Church's constant teaching on the sinfulness of contraception in the document "Married Love and the Gift of Life," released by the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops this week at their annual fall meeting. "The bishops said what pro-life activists have been saying for years: The 'contraceptive mentality' is impoverished, even sad," commented Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League. "The bishops didn't mince words. They said, quite clearly, that 'contraception is objectively immoral.'"

"The bishops also recognized that flooding our society with contraceptives has encouraged the kind of irresponsible sexual behavior and anti-child mentality that directly leads to abortion," Scheidler said. "At our groundbreaking 'Contraception Is Not the Answer' conference held this September in Chicago, I explained why it is necessary to address the root issue of contraception if we are to have any hope of stopping abortion." Scheidler continued: "The bishops noted that the Church's teaching against contraception is one that many couples today have not heard, or have not heard in a way they could appreciate and understand. There is a need to offer couples persuasive, logical arguments against contraception. That's what the eight presenters did at 'Contraception Is Not the Answer.' They explained in plain language the impact of contraception on our society -- its effects on women, on men, on marriage, and on the culture."

Another good reason for priests to marry.
"flooding our society with contraceptives has encouraged the kind of irresponsible sexual behavior(TRUE) and anti-child mentality that directly leads to abortion," (WRONG). IMHO Mixing two statements doesn't make them all correct AND it is not corroborated by any study.

Preventing a life is no where as serious as taking a life. You cannot equate one with the other. I thought the POPE was the one with infallibility, apparently correct as these are Bishops. All are my opinion and no disrespect or insult meant.

If you think that contraception doesn't lead to a demand for abortion, you should take that up with the Supreme Court, because they apparently think otherwise, since they cited their Griswold decision in justifying Roe.

And I have no idea what you think this has to do with priests marrying. No Christians at all approved of contraception before 1930, and plenty of them had married ministers.

Sorry to hit your post again, but... "The Supreme Court"... cited by a Freeper as an Authority... especially in its dealing with Abortion.

Do not mistake it, I am against Abortion, but I think contraception BEFORE PREGNANCY is a personal issue. I do think contraception is a decision between two people with mutual, not one sided agreement. Abortion or the morning after pill is murder. A big difference.

Contraception is telling God that you will not serve him with your body. And when you start telling God "No, I will not serve. I will not be fruitful and multiply as you command me to in this marriage. No, I will not serve you this way, God." Ah, but you've just signed up with someone else who said he wouldn't serve and then crawled out of the garden on his belly eating the dust.

Our belief rests first with the Divine Mercy of Christ revealed in his death on the Cross. For this reason we believe there is a place of cleansing called Purgatory where offenders who did not fully understand the nature of their sin are given an opportunity for prayer and repentance and cleansing through the work of the Holy Spirit. This belief is not held by Protestants in general, but for Catholics it is a comfort to know that regardless of our failings, ignorances and stupidities that lead to sin, God who is Love and Mercy and Justice is willing to continue the work of cleansing the soul so that it may behold Jesus face to face.

God willing I shall receive mercy enough to be drawn into Purgatory where He may temper my temper and purify me of all unrighteousness. Until then I must work diligently through the practice and acquisition of virtues that are contrary to my besetting sins. This is very difficult at times, but it is part of the Cross that is carried having to do with one's own fallen nature being redeemed by Christ with every breath and every day that life is given to me.

So, where is the scientific study to back your statements.

My point is simply that the Supreme Court itself testified to the link between abortion and contraception. Their rationale for permitting abortion ends up being precisely the same as their rationale for permitting contraception, and indeed their rationale for preserving abortion in Casey was precisely that it was needed as a backstop when contraception failed!

I'm a pro-life Catholic, and have zero sympathy for Roe or Casey. I'm pointing out that the link between contraception and abortion is not a figment of the bishops' imagination, but very real.
