Daily Reflections with Oswald Chambers [January 21, 2007]

Recall What God Remembers

" Thus says the Lord: ’I remember . . . the kindness of your youth . . .’ "

—Jeremiah 2:2

Am I as spontaneously kind to God as I used to be, or am I only expecting God to be kind to me? Does everything in my life fill His heart with gladness, or do I constantly complain because things don’t seem to be going my way? A person who has forgotten what God treasures will not be filled with joy. It is wonderful to remember that Jesus Christ has needs which we can meet— "Give Me a drink" (John 4:7). How much kindness have I shown Him in the past week? Has my life been a good reflection on His reputation?

God is saying to His people, "You are not in love with Me now, but I remember a time when you were." He says, "I remember . . . the love of your betrothal . . ." (Jeremiah 2:2). Am I as filled to overflowing with love for Jesus Christ as I was in the beginning, when I went out of my way to prove my devotion to Him? Does He ever find me pondering the time when I cared only for Him? Is that where I am now, or have I chosen man’s wisdom over true love for Him? Am I so in love with Him that I take no thought for where He might lead me? Or am I watching to see how much respect I get as I measure how much service I should give Him?

As I recall what God remembers about me, I may also begin to realize that He is not what He used to be to me. When this happens, I should allow the shame and humiliation it creates in my life, because it will bring godly sorrow, and "godly sorrow produces repentance . . ." (2 Corinthians 7:10).

In 1910 Chambers married Gertrude Hobbs. They had one daughter, Kathleen, who still resides in London (as of 1992).

In 1911 he founded and became principal of the Bible Training College in Clapham, London, where he lectured until the school was closed in 1915 because of World War I. In October 1915 he sailed for Zeitoun, Egypt (near Cairo), where he ministered to Australian and New Zealand troops as a YMCA chaplain. He died there November 15, 1917, following surgery for a ruptured appendix.

My Utmost for His Highest, his best-known book, has been continuously in print in the United States since 1935 and in this, the last decade of the century, remains in the top ten titles of the religious book bestseller list with millions of copies in print. It has become a Christian classic. [from the flyleaf of the book]

Those of us who have such a perspective and set of experiences sometimes post articles or even visions, dreams, prophecies to the list in the religion forum. Sadly, it tends to end up being 98% me that does it.

There is now the caucus option which sometimes fits such things. So that cuts down wholesale on the ugly hostilities that some folks with different religious biases like to throw about on such threads.

In open threads, it gets so hostile virtually instantly that most folks of our persuasion just turn into lurkers.

Anyway--it's up to you. Just let me know.

Happy to read any dreams/visions you care to share.

Blessings,

Add me to the ping list and I will see what I see.

If anything, it will give me a few friends that can relate to what happens in my world.

Of late, my ex-husband has been having experiences where he dreamed it some time ago and now it happens. I am glad he finally gets that I am not nuts and the fact that our boys have the same thing, too.

Thank you so much for your testimony and prayer, dear Quix. I came across this wonderful hymn in my morning worship time, speaking to "remembrance" as Chambers does:

In the Hour of Trial

In the hour of trial, Jesus, plead for me,
Lest by base denial I depart from Thee.
When Thou seest me waver, with a look recall,
Nor for fear or favor suffer me to fall.

With forbidden pleasures would this vain world charm,
Or its sordid treasures spread to work me harm,
Bring to my remembrance sad Gethsemane,
Or, in darker semblance, cross-crowned Calvary.

Should Thy mercy send me sorrow, toil and woe,
Or should pain attend me on my path below,
Grant that I may never fail Thy hand to see;
Grant that I may ever cast my care on Thee.

When my last hour cometh, fraught with strife and pain,
When my dust returneth to the dust again,
On Thy truth relying, through that mortal strife,
Jesus, take me, dying, to eternal life.

~James Montgomery

Hebrews 2:
14Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. 17Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

"I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail."
~Jesus, Luke 22:32

...a few friends that can relate to what happens in my world.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!
~Psalm 133:1

It occurs to me that members of one family all share a resemblance, though the siblings be quite distinct from one another, and that in every single cell of one living body the same DNA can be found, though the parts are all quite different in appearance and function!

On a private message board we discussed the group dislike to Sylvia Browne and in the end, it is her lack of humility and humanity and compassion, even though she made people more accepting to what we go through. Her arrogance takes away from the Lord's gifts and work within us.

I don't generally judge, but tend to sometimes make assessments of character to understand both others and myself. My post is not meant to be mean spirited in any way.

I am fortunate that the real Allison DuBois and her husband took me (and a few others...) under their wing. John Edward (not John Edwards) has the same "down to earth" quality as Allison and they make it easier for me.

Glad there are others that share here, too.

The same is true for the Spirit - the mind of Christ (I Cor 2) - body of Christ.

That is the point of the good tree/good fruit test in Matthew 7. If we don't see all of the fruits of the Spirit in a spiritual leader, we can be sure the Spirit is not in control.

The fruits of the Spirit are named in Galatians 5, to paraphrase: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control.

I had lunch with a good friend today and we went shopping, hallelujah! One of my favorite things to do. Anyway, at lunch she spoke about how much I had changed in the last five years, that I was no longer bitter and angry about my illness. That was such an encouragement to me because I know it's God's handiwork, not mine. He's given me peace about my life (and my death eventually) and He's beginning to answer prayers I've prayed for over 15 years. My oldest son actually came to church on Sunday! First time in a looonnnggg time. It was wonderful sitting between my two handsome sons. What a savior!
