Old Testament 'proof': Royal seal discovered
World Net Daily ^ | 8/3/08 | Joe Kovacs

A team of archaeologists in Israel has unearthed what's believed to be the royal seal of an Old Testament prince who is said to have tossed the prophet Jeremiah down a well. Royal seal bears name of Gedaliah, a prince to Judah's King Zedekiah, mentioned in the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah. (courtesy Dr. Eilat Mazar) The stamped engraving, known as a "bulla," was discovered earlier this year about 600 feet south of the Temple Mount, but is just now making headlines. Team leader Dr. Eilat Mazar of Jerusalem's Hebrew University says the imprint was found in clay, astonishingly well-preserved, bearing the name of Gedaliah, the son of Pashur. "How absolutely fantastic and special this find is can only be realized when you hold in your hand this magnificent one-centimeter piece of clay and know that it survived 2,600 years in the debris of the destruction, and came to us complete and in perfect condition," Mazar said. Gedaliah is mentioned by name in Jeremiah 38:1 as he served Judah's King Zedekiah in the final days before Jerusalem was conquered by Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C. The excavation area in the section of Jerusalem known as the City of David, looking east. (courtesy Dr. Eilat Mazar) The prophet's writings tell of the actions that Gedaliah and his fellow princes took against him."

These little finds archaeologists make which reinforce evidence the bible is an accurate account of Israels history, and God's existance should really lighten all believers hearts.

If it just gets one nonbeliever thinking and questioning, seaching for the truth, then this is what makes these discoveries so great!

Every time something is found in Israel that backs up the Bible, I just grin from ear to ear. All the “scholars” and the nay-sayers and the “sophisticated ones” keep jawing about the Bible being just a “collection of moral stories”, while that wonderful little country keeps yielding its treasures to prove otherwise (and despite the efforts of the mohammedan heathens to destroy evidence of Jewish and Christian existence in Israel before mohammed).

Remember when the non-believers told us the Hittites didn’t really exist, and were just a product of Jewish nationalistic mytho-history?

Guess they got that one wrong.

Have seen this stuff before. The IAE will declare it a forgery, and the higher Biblical Criticism crew here on FR will say it is impossible.

The Naked Archaeologist did a show on a similar find. Even though the evidence pointed to Hebrews in the Holy Land (which is quite shocking nowadays), the archaeologists he talked with all said “Impossible! I have staked my reputation on it being otherwise!”.

For such as those, no proof will be enough.

I still hear that one quite a bit. Heard it in college as a matter of fact.

When I brought articles and papers to the professor talking of the Hittites, he just said it was “Christian propaganda”. Never mind that most of the papers I brought were from non Christians and even atheists!

Wait a sec....you're telling me that a college professor thought that the Hittites - one of THE most well-documented ANE people-groups from both ancient (non-biblical) literature and from archaeology - are "Christian propaganda"?

I'm sorry, but I don't think you were getting the bang for your education buck that you should have been!

He is quite famous for being an atheist professor of Religion at Iowa State. I took the class because..
1. I needed the “diversity” credit.
2. I really enjoyed the arguments.

It was fun.

He did not believe that the people that others called Hittites were really Hittites. He said they were Grecian peoples (which they may have been). He also didn't really believe that much of the Old Testament happened, like the kingdom of Judah and Israel, Kind David, etc. Which made him a bit uncomfortable when I asked about all the extra Biblical citations of a Jewish kingdom that revolted in AD 70.

Brilliant man, who lost his faith and became rabidly anti Christian. He still attacks Christian Professors at Iowa State, most recently a science professor who wanted tenure. I pray for his soul.

Guillermo Gonzalez, I think. Read his book co-written with Jay W Richards, The Privileged Planet: How Our Place In The Cosmos Is Designed For Discovery.

Yep, I remember. These “scholars” and “wise ones” knock the Bible, and the Lord in Heaven laughs at then and then tells the Archangen Gabriel, “Gabriel, help those Israel archeologists find that item over there.” The “scholars” and “wise ones” will get a very uncomfortable surprise one day. God and the Host of Heaven have never stopped loving Israel.

I’ve seen such characters on The Naked Archeologist. Simcha seems to always leave the impression that he believes the Bible is right, regardless. He always seems to treat believing Jews and Christians with a lot of respect.

The name “Hittites” found in the Old Testament was lifted from there (in modern times) and plastered over the “Forgotten Empire”. There’s likely no other connection between the OT Hittites and the so-called Hittites of Anatolia.

It was analogous to claiming (as has been done) that the real Atlantis was on Thera, or submerged off Cyprus, or Crete, or found in the mountains of northern Africa, etc.

There is a lot of foolishness in what passes for academic opinion, but this Hittite thing is a red herring.
