Pope to Announce New Archbishop of New York
Newsmax ^ | 1/29/2009 | Edward Pentin

Pope Benedict XVI is set to announce a new Archbishop of New York to replace Cardinal Edward Egan, an informed Vatican source tells Newsmax.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source says the decision was made today and an announcement is expected “within the next week to ten days”. He says Cardinal Egan’s successor is from the “conservative and orthodox” wing of the Church.

Speculation on the next leader of the New York Archdiocese, one of the most important posts in the U.S. Roman Catholic Church, has been going on for some time among church-watchers.

Cardinal Egan, 76, submitted his resignation in 2007 when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75, but the Pope asked him to stay on in the post. Many commentators saw Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to New York last year as a final farewell to the cardinal.

Names often cited as Egan’s possible successor include Archbishop Harry Mansell of Hartford, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, Archbishop John Myers of Newark, Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves of San Juan.

Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has also been named as a potential candidate in the past, however the new archbishop will not be him, according to the source.

The Pope has chosen an archbishop who is “dynamic, conservative and orthodox”, he says – traits which Vatican watchers say best match those of Archbishop Dolan. The 59 year old prelate is said to be good with the media, genuine, and intelligent. He also has Irish ancestry, a common characteristic of previous archbishops of New York.

Better news, I suppose, than if they were describing the new guy as "stagnant, liberal and heterodox."

Cognitive dissonance? But coming from Cardinal Levada who knows what this really means.

Think about the rumors of who would replace JPII...don't recall many prognosticators considering Joseph Ratzinger!

Wilton Gregory happens to be black. If Gregory is named New York’s Archbishop, we’ll all have to endure weeks of hearing ONLY about the fact that Gregory is black. I really can’t listen to that stuff anymore. God spare us this, please.

Actually a good number of us predicted Ratzinger.

Myers is pretty solid; Dolan’s okay. I don’t know about the rest of them.

I wish he’d choose Chaput, but since he’s a Westerner, I imagine that’s simply impossible.

He says Cardinal Egan’s successor is from the “conservative and orthodox” wing of the Church.

You have given a hat tip to Patrick Madrid. Is this the answer to his request for prayer, yesterday? I'm very confused. However, if what he says is true, then I have only one word that needs to be expressed.

Allelulia!

I doubt that the anticipated event had anything to do with retirement of a bishop, judging by the way it was played up so dramatically.

Egan was kind of middle of the road in terms of tradition and orthodoxy, right?

Oh ... please let this be true! In his favor are the increasing number of bishops in this jurisdiction that are very liberal and will soon be retiring. What better successor to Cardinal O'Connor than Archbishop Dolan!

ROFL ..... Only those of us who have suffered through and endured the miserable bishops assigned to NY can truly appreciate how the media would have a 'hay day' over such an announcement. Let's pray that Egan's successor is Dolan or one like him. After 50+ years of liberal leadership, I don't think we can endure much more.

Nope. 'Twas referenced on a separate post on his blog. To the best of my knowledge, there is no relation between the two.

Absolutely. He was no Cardinal O'Connor or Spellman. For the most part, NYS has some 'way out there, ultra liberal' bishops who need a good smackdown. I don't imagine the new Archbishop would react so quickly but we can be certain that he will hold them in check until they retire.

Countdown Clock until Bishop Hubbard's Retirement
