Italian scientist reproduces Shroud of Turin

An Italian scientist says he has reproduced the Shroud of Turin, a feat that he says proves definitively that the linen some Christians revere as Jesus Christ's burial cloth is a medieval fake. The shroud, measuring 14 feet, 4 inches by 3 feet, 7 inches bears the image, eerily reversed like a photographic negative, of a crucified man some believers say is Christ. "We have shown that is possible to reproduce something which has the same characteristics as the Shroud," Luigi Garlaschelli, who is due to illustrate the results at a conference on the para-normal this weekend in northern Italy, said on Monday. A professor of organic chemistry at the University of Pavia, Garlaschelli made available to Reuters the paper he will deliver and the accompanying comparative photographs.

“If somebody claimed to have found a toga that Julius Ceasar wore, would you doubt it?”

Yes. The trade in fake historical items is old. Haven’t you looked on Ebay before?

“I can’t imagine what is so hard about believing that this shroud was the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.”

Well it popped up in the 1200s from some potential con-men out to make money selling things to people with the Religious Icon trade was big business and each city set out to have better icons than the next in order to get pilgrim trade.

Money corrupts, and religious folks are easy prey.

This is one piece of evidence. Anything can be faked.

I am not a big believer in the shroud, but not that exciting. Other evidence points to ancient origin, so if fake, it’s an old one.

Do we really need relics to support our faith?

Nope.

Interestingly they take our minds off of the object of our faith and breed idolatry.

Sorry to post three times in a string like this, but this requires a response: Lots of peoples’ faith is very weak to be worried about whether this cloth is real or not.

My brother, that statement is as logic-free as the one the "scientist" made. I'm not aware of any person whose faith in the death and Resurrection of Christ depends on the authenticity of a cloth in an Italian church, and therefore will quit the Faith if it's debunked. Are you? Can you show them to me?

I do admit I find it odd that the Shroud’s Jesus looks like like our Western Last Supper version, and he’s clearly not historically accurate.

“Hardly. I would love this cloth to be real.

“But it appears to be fake”

Sorry, no one who has read the evidence can make that statement. The evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of authenticity.

That’s why the last two highly publicized challenges to authenticity have totally ignored the evidence in favor and have resorted to this “I can produce the same thing myself.”

In each case, what they produce isn’t remotely the same thing. Not even close. At most they could say, “I have shown that it’s possible to produce a handful of characteristics.” But that proves nothing. One has to show that one can produce using present means the same combination of properties that constitute the Shroud. And some of those properties (pollen evidence, matching with the Oviedo facecloth, the evidence that shows that the linen is close to 2000 years old—the only contrary evidence was the now discredited C-14 tests, all the other textile evidence points toward 2000-year-old cloth), the 3-D nature of the image that differs from what is produced by draping over a body and so on and so forth).

But to those who have a religious need to know that this is a fake, no amount of evidence can convince.

All I need is the Bible for my faith.

I don't need a "relic" such as the Bible!

"The shroud is not an idol, and it is not worshipped."

Idol: n. an image or other material object representing a deity to which religious worship is addressed.

Looks like to me that it is simply an extension of the little plastic Jesus statues and all the other paraphenalia that some rely on in their prayers to God and Christ.

If "evidence" such as the Shroud, is necessary then it seems to me that faith is hollow. True faith requires no proof.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen"(Heb.11:1).

“Ruffian’s objections come from the same-old, same-old thinking that accuse Roman Catholics (and others) of “worshipping “ saints and relics.”

Nonsense. It has to do with common sense and good Christian people being taken for fools by a 800 year old con.

But I guess you are of the belief one cannot be a Christian and have the common sense to suspect that there are con men who steal from good Christians and have done so for a long time.

Not according to some on this thread.
If you don’t believe the cloth bears the face of Jesus Christ, you’re doomed to Hell.

Who are the "some" making that claim? Be specific: identify the post in which that claim is made.

I cannot find any such post.

“If you don’t believe the cloth bears the face of Jesus Christ, you’re doomed to Hell.”

Are you for real?

No one maintains this position.....

The RC Church doesn’t even maintain a firm position on the truth about this relic.

Apparently a great many around here do.

Show me the people who say that they only believe Jesus is the crucified and Resurrected Son of God if his burial cloth is in a church in Torino.

I'll wait.

It’s getting to be a regular catfight between the Holy Rollers and the Catholics, isn’t it?!

take our minds

"our"????

Who's "we", Kemosabe?

If relics breed idolatry in your mind ... by all means avoid them.

But please refrain from projecting that problem onto others.

Who is addressing worship to the Shroud of Turin?

Actually, FAITH is the "EVIDENCE.

Belief in the day to day miracles which occur in our lives is the "EVIDENCE," not some tatty piece of cloth of dubious origin.

That doesn’t make any more sense than the things Ruffian said.
