CHATHAM, N.J. — A priest has been found dead in a New Jersey church rectory, and investigators are treating it as a crime.

There was no word Friday afternoon on how the Rev. Ed Hinds died. The clothed body of the 61-year-old priest was found at St. Patrick's Church in Chatham in the morning.

Capt. Jeffrey Paul of the Morris County prosecutor's office tells The Star-Ledger of Newark that the area is "being treated as a crime scene."

Police have closed off a four-block area around the church. Chatham is about 10 miles west of Newark.

Hinds has been at the parish since 2003.

Sad that it was thought necessary to point out that the body was clothed. Requiem aeternam.

Add to this one the Chicago priest who was stabbed 20 times two weeks ago and it is classified as a suicide.

My sister just picked up her children from St.Patrick’s. She was questioned by police, as were all the parents. She was told in Chatham that his death is officially a homicide.

But it won’t be considered a “hate crime’. For Heaven’s sake, he’s a man of God. Accoding to the new bill that passed, someone will say he probably deserved it because he spoke out about homosexuals. They’ll say this poor man was in the wrong for spouting hate speech.

This is so sad.

Father Ed was a kind and thoughtful priest. He said Mass at the installation ceremony for officers of the Knights of Columbus in Chatham a couple weeks ago (I am the outgoing PGK)and he was always involved in the Knights. This is a tragic loss to the Chatham community. Prayers for Father Ed and for St. Pat’s Parish.

Thank you very much for posting that personal information on Fr. Ed. This is truly a tragedy. Our prayers go out for him and his parishioners.
