Please pray for my son-in-law [Update @ #184]
Free Republic | March 10, 2010 | Judith Anne

Posted on 03/10/2010 8:24:31 AM PST by Judith Anne

My son in law, Sam, went into the ER with severe abdominal pain the night before last; a CT scan showed a bowel obstruction, tumor, on the right side. He had surgery last night, and 5-6 inches of bowel were removed due to cancer. The doctors said there was no way to foresee this, as he is fairly young. He and my daughter have insurance to take care of the medical expenses, but they have three children under 15. After the surgery, the doctor said he was "cautiously optimistic" but the pathology reports are not due until Thursday, and at that time they'll start to work up a treatment plan.

This is a tremendous unforeseen blow to this nice young family, I'm babysitting for the grandkids while my daughter spends time at the hospital. She's strong, and so is he, their faith is in the Lord. He's Baptist, she's Catholic, they've been happily married 16 years.

A fine freeper needs our prayers.

I add my prayers to all of those above. Cancer is a frightening thing to deal with. My daughter just had a melanoma removed from her beautiful face. She has a jagged, four-inch scar on her cheek, after a four hour surgery. It was such a tiny spot, but had deep roots that had spread. The surgical oncologist “thinks” they got it all.

May the good Lord bless your son-in-law and those who love him. Please keep us updated.

Prayers up. Check out Vitamin D and colon cancer at PubMed. My sister, 65, and mother, 92, had colon cancer. Both are still going strong. Ask if the tissue was checked for cyclooxygenase 2 expression.

Thanks to both of you for your links. Printed out and given to daughter to take to dr. conference tomorrow. It is scheduled for late in the afternoon or early evening, I am not sure when I will be able to post the news.

Quix, I will ping you to the update with the pathology report.

Aside from personal prayers, we all pray together twice a day, plus the kids pray at their parish school.

Sam is feeling better, all things considered, and very much looking forward to having the nasogastric tube out, either tomorrow or over the weekend. He is still having fevers at night, but the doctor said that is to be expected; plus he is getting antibiotics. Small steps...

Ahhh. Thanks. That helps me picture his situation better as I pray.

Thrilled to hear of your praying together daily.

God bless.

No offense Quix, but they always pray together as a family twice daily, plus at dinner time. Dear Hubby and I raised our children that way, and habits formed over 35 years are darned near unbreakable.

I wouldn’t doubt that for a minute.

I was just under the impression, perhaps mistaken, that you were ALL praying TOGETHER in the same room anew given this situation. i.e. not just them in their home and you in yours.

And, personally, I happen to have a bias that earnest heart-felt prayers together amongst loved ones is a very good thing—and the more the better.

Thanks for your kind reply.

Praying for your son in law.

Let me add these words of encouragement:

My Dad had a similar experience. But he was not a young man at the time. He was in his upper 60s. Same blockage, same slow diagnosis, same 7 or so inches of intestine removed.

They put him on chemo, which made him a little sick and a somewhat tired. Didn't have many sessions with the IV, and then switched exclusively to an oral medication. That made him sunburn easily, so he wore sunblock when he went down to the softball field to watch the games, which was a big part of his summer, even before he retired. (He'd been an infielder and a great base stealer even as late when I was young. :) ).

He lived for over a dozen more years. Even then the cancer never returned, and it was 20 years ago, things have improved since then. It was Alzheimer's that finally got him.

So, there is not just hope, there is every possibility of a great outcome.

Well, I’ve been staying with them for several days, so, it’s all of us together, and with Sam in the hospital, he’s on the speakerphone.

Thanks for sharing that encouraging story about your Dad. It was such a surprise, you hear hoofbeats, you expect horses, not zebras. :(

That was kind of my image and I felt that was quite PRECIOUS—as well as relationally sweet and more prayerfully powerful given such a group praying in love filled faith.

Psalm 141:2 - Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Add my Prayers for your son-in-law to the fragrant cloud rising up before The Lord.
