Christians from political left and right sign 'Civility Covenant'
CNN ^ | March 25, 2010 | Dan Gilgoff

Posted on 03/26/2010 4:27:43 PM PDT by Colofornian

A group of more than 100 prominent Christians ranging from evangelical minister Jim Wallis on the political left to...Chuck Colson on the right released a document Thursday calling for an end to the fight club tone of the national political discourse.

...the "Civility Covenant"...says...churches have too often "reflected the political divisions of our culture rather than the unity we have in the body of Christ."

SNIP

...the covenant...has 114 signatories from a broad swath of Christian traditions, including the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the head of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God...

The list...includes...conservative Christian leaders like Harry Jackson -- who led the unsuccessful fight against gay marriage in Washington -- to Morna Murray, president of the progressive Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, which is close to the Obama White House.

SNIP

Quoting the New Testament, the new covenant urges Christians to "put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you."

"We owe a certain responsibility to each other as believers," said Colson, an influential evangelical Christian voice. "This doesn't mean I haven't challenged some people's theology. But the document says we're not going to challenge each other's motives or engage in ad hominem attacks."

SNIP

...Wallis organized a boycott of Beck's show but says the timing of the covenant's release is incidental.

Colson said the document "wouldn't apply to Glenn Beck because we're talking about the conversation in the family of believers ... Glenn Beck is a Mormon."

Many Christians don't consider Mormons...to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian...

From the article: Colson said the document "wouldn't apply to Glenn Beck because we're talking about the conversation in the family of believers ... Glenn Beck is a Mormon." Many Christians don't consider Mormons -- members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian.

Good discernment, Chuck.

This excerpt pretty much sums up why Colson signed the statement: "We owe a certain responsibility to each other as believers," said Colson, an influential evangelical Christian voice. "This doesn't mean I haven't challenged some people's theology. But the document says we're not going to challenge each other's motives or engage in ad hominem attacks."

This needs to extend to online forums like FR. We can't judge the inner heart-motive; only God can see that (1 Samuel 16:7).

We can also distinguish challenging the message vs. attacking the person.

Wonderful!

The Christians turn the other cheek, AGAIN!

That’s just SOOOOOOO good for the Republic.

Oh, and the anti-Religion communists too, lest we forget their aims.

They’ll rip off the other cheek to, Christians.

I plan to be civil because I am a Christian. From what I’ve seen and heard from this guy Jim Wallis, he has perverted the Gospel and isn’t a true Christian.

commie Wallis ... that’s all I needed to know.

This is a joke, to make the tea parties go away. Not going to work. So why is a community organizer who doesn’t have the brains to run a successful lemonade stand scared so much about community organizations now ... Interestingly curious isn’t it.

The next step is to make it a hate crime to criticize people you disagree with. Don’t these idiots realize that if they’re signing this stupid agreement, they’re obviously not the ones causing the problem. I swear this is all another setup.

Stop the madness!

History repeating again and again.

The left fights dirty, wins, then says we need to stop fighting.

In theory this sounds good, it really means however that the right is to shut up and the left goes on their merry way doing and saying what they want.

Jesus DID throw out the money chargers from the Temple.

Having righteous outrage at theives and liars is no sin.

Destorying property? Rocks? Sniper attacks? no.

This is a declaration of economic war against the producers of this country. To rob us and then kill us with their phony “health care” bill.

The coming avalanche of the loss of freedom is going try to slowly crush the middle class, like a frog in warm water when the gas has just been turned on.

There is a way to stop this insanity. But it will take a large amount of anger and willingness to stand up, to do it.

The crux of this current economic mess is the Credit Swaps. These CDS’s are “insurance” for the mortgage backed securities, MBS, that they made up and sold. They are dependent on a steady stream of money from mortgages. This is what is holding up the Federal government, and even the FED has this “stuff” on its books right now.

Don’t pay the mortgage. This WILL collapse the system. It will kill the dollar, it will kill the ability of this country to get “loans”, they wouldn’t be able to PAY FOR ANY OF THIS TO THEIR CRONIES, PUBLIC SERVANTS, if we push this system over the cliff.

Think about it. It would work, but are enough people willing to give the government a push, are enough people awake to want to think outside the box?

Again...Colson indicates this is dealing with believer to believer as part of the broad "Body of Christ." (It isn't a statement for how we deal w/outsiders; although it's not as though we're to be "uncivil" toward them, as well...here are the apostle Paul's words on that:)

5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Col. 4:5-6)

Colson is misguided.

Wallis teaches the Marxist gospel.

I’m generally civil because I’m civil. Not because I sign something and not because I agree to be.

I personally would never sign anything that has Jim Wallis’ signature.

The remark that Wallis doesn’t have to be civil to Beck because Beck is a mormon is proof to me of how empty this thing is. Wallis is a marxist. If you can be civil to a marxist you can be civil to a mormon. Are marxists to be construed as members of our “family of believers” now? More sleight of hand and more reason not to engage in this kind of clownery.

Sorry Colofornian, those on the Left are not Christians.

Colson was wrong, he compromised.

They don't lead Holy lives, they don't believe in the righteousness of the bible or the fallibility of the bible.

They cannot be Christians and believe either in Gay Marriage or Abortions.

Being Born-Again, as Christ commanded us to be in the New Testament, implies, in context, that All things are new, old things have passed away.

You cannot be a Christian and either practice sin (as clearly defined in the Bible) or believe that it is OK for others to practice sin.

1 John 3

1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

5. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

If you’re not a Christian you have nothing to worry about, just like Mr. Beck. Christians can be civil and still speak the truth.

I hear they make delicious shish kebobs because they are so delicate, tender and never tough even when they know they'll be roasted alive.
