The 2010 South Dakota Synod Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America narrowly voted Friday against the national church's statement accepting gay relationships.
By a margin of eight votes, the state assembly passed a resolution, 251-243, with 10 abstaining, rescinding the national 2009 Churchwide Assembly's decision to recognize same-gender couples through its social statement "Human Sexuality: Gift & Trust," which also passed narrowly at the national level, according to Bishop David Zellmer, leader of South Dakota's ELCA congregations.
A re-vote was sought on Friday's action, but that request was denied by a 19-vote margin.
The state assembly is expected to vote Saturday on whether or not to rescind the national church's policy that allows gay clergy in a monogamous relationship to be on the ELCA's list of pastors and serve in churches.

Good.
Howsabout simply reaffirming the need to preach without reservation the Gospel of Jesus Christ, given into death for sinners. Talk about a shocker.
Man, I still can’t believe there’s a major church that has leadership that believes gay relationships are okay. Strangely, I doubt they allow open adulterous relationships. Where’s the common sense and Bible knowledge on this there?
Where have you been? PC-USA (presbyterians), ELCA, EC-USA (episcopals), UCC. All four of these larger denoms are gay-ok.

I disagree. Obviously they do allow open adulterous relationships.
One church in a small village 21 one miles down the road left the main body some while back. Here in town they are in the process. Several members have simply joined other denominations.
Small towns —small congregations. Sad it has come to this.

Be rooted in Christ!
The sad thing is 99.9% of the church population have no clue how liberal the heads of the church are.
I'm single and in my 20s I think I can miss church and still have a faithful heart.
Doesn't mean I won't talk to friends who still remain there, I just rather avoid it then have myself associated with such radicalism.
Unlike, Obama I take responsibility and do not want to associate with radicals like him.
Thank you, and all the other ex-ELCA'ers for showing me all the disgusting liberal muck that is the ELCA.
God Bless you all!

The list is updated weekly.
Thus far 58 of 65 Synods have met. The disaster is far greater than we could have imagined in August of last year; for only two Synods of 58 have managed to pass Memorials repudiating the Churchwide Assembly.
One of those--South Dakota, subject of this discussion--was by the thinnest of margins. South Carolina had much stronger margins.
G.K. Chesterton warned that "when orthodoxy becomes optional, eventually it will be prosribed."
This reflects action (or lack thereof...) at Synod level. That doesn't address the actions of individual congregations within a given Synod. Any figures on that?
Maybe the majority of ELCA members oppose ordaining gays, but the majority of people, who attend the synod assemblies, support ordaining gays. Have you heard of a survey, about that issue, among average ELCA members? I used google, to look for such a survey, but I couldn’t find one.

The 2010 South Dakota Synod Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America twice voted in support of gay clergy on Saturday, aligning the state assembly with the national churchs position -- a seeming switch from Fridays vote opposing the national churchs acceptance of gay relationships. The resolutions were responses to the national 2009 Churchwide Assembly's inclusive position on gay couples and gay clergy, which disconcerted many congregations and worshipers nationwide. . . .
That would mean a congregation sending people to Synod assemblies who don't represent the views of the congregation. Doesn't seem plausible to me. Possible, though...
Ya think?
I hope that my theory is correct. If I’m wrong, the majority of ELCA members support ignoring about 20 Bible verses that state that homosexuality is a sin. Maybe the pro-gay people volunteered to attend the synod assemblies and the national assemblies without telling their churches their views about that issue.
Well, the cat's out of the bag once they return and their vote becomes known. Not a nice way to win friends and influence people.
The article SmithL linked to in post #15 shows there is much division among congregations within the SD Synod as, I'm sure, there is nationwide. Just because one calls oneself a Christian and goes to church, that doesn't mean one is Biblically based.
I suspect this is especially true within a Synod such as the ELCA. Many may be open to influence when someone with credentials (as say, a Pastor) gives misinterpretation to Biblical passages.
The homo-activists need to be out-activisted!
