How to Book of Mormon is Not Like the Bible
Meridian Magazine ^ | Grant Hardy

Posted on 06/29/2010 8:28:07 AM PDT by Colofornian

Quite reasonably, the current “Introduction” to the Book of Mormon begins, “The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible.”...

Yet...we are likely to point out some significant differences as well...

...The Bible is more of a library than a single book, and there are tremendous differences in genre...

At first glance, the contents of the Book of Mormon appear to be similarly diverse...On closer inspection... the Book of Mormon turns to be entirely narrative. The whole book takes the form of a story told by narrators...but we know who is responsible for every word in the Book of Mormon. It’s either Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, or Moroni (plus a few minor authors...). This means that the Book of Mormon, as a whole, is a much more integrated and deliberately constructed volume than the Bible.

...the Book of Mormon operates by very different literary principles than the Bible. Consider the characteristics of Old Testament narrators as described by Shimon Bar-Efrat, formerly of Hebrew University at Jerusalem:

“The narrator in most biblical narratives appears to be omniscient”

“Biblical narrators do not usually mention themselves”

“Biblical narrators [generally] make no reference to their activity in writing the narratives”

“The narrators do not...address their audience directly”

“Outside the books of Kings there are very few instances in which the narrator passes judgment”

How many of these statements are true of the Book of Mormon? None of them.

Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, and Moroni are...often...participants in the stories...They interrupt their narratives regularly to tell us about their lives, their testimonies, and their desires. They worry about their “weakness in writing” (Eth. 12:23, 40; cf. 2 Ne. 33:1, 4). And they do not hesitate to address readers directly to explain their intentions,...editorial techniques,...emotional responses to...events...

Now aren't we just so special.
Pop corn, I like Parmesan on mine, along with some nice iced coffee to wash it down with.

I noted that you are a recently returned veteran. Thank you for your service. One time an anti on this site said that Mormons do not believe in serving in the military. I just about blew a gasket!! Our Prophet is a veteran of the Navy, for goodness’ sake. CTR!!!

Truth in advertizing time saundra -

But the Bible - Old and New Testaments - are in tact.

That is clearly NOT what your prophets and priesthood teach. On the contrary, it is mormon doctrine that the bible has been corrupted and is untrustworthy.

AFA those "few footnotes" by smith - they are from his 'retranslation' of the Bible aren't they SD - the Joseph Smith Translation - a completely bogus work that just places one more nail in the coffin of a false prophet.

Do you have to butter coat the truth all the time?

I am not for lopping off of heads, especially mine. Actually, now that I think of it, David lopped off the head of Goliath, didn’t he?

The Book of Mormon tells of the lopping off of a bunch of arms.

Men!!

I don’t know why I bother, though. A made-up mind is a dangerous thing.

Tell us what's so "dangerous" Sandy? If Mormons are right, most non-never-Mormons will be "saved" anyway, right?

What will they "miss out" on?
Being a goddess in the afterlife? (Is that your plan?)
Having countless (as in billions) of spirit babies? (Is that your plan?)
As the "Mom Goddess" not even getting a mere "mention" in your husband's 'Scriptures"?
And, then, if your husband so desires, he can add to the polygamous harem all he wants to?

(Not only did Joseph Smith have many additional "wives" sealed to him post-death, but LDS Leaders Still Believe There Will Be Polygamy in Heaven )

The same reason i "bother" the truth is important, I noticed taht you did not counter the evidence I presented, is there a reason for that?

Joey smith made himself king and a 3 star general of his own private drug cartel type army of 5,000 while the US army only had 8,000...he raged war against the US governments and state governments..

He applied to the US congress for a 100,000 private standing army...they turned him down of course...it would have been like Iran asking to station a Isloamic terrorist army of millions within our borders...

Later Briggy Young continued his insurrectuion against the US government and private American citizens fronm his theocratic dictorial kingdom...the US government had to go in and protect American citizens from Youngs evil empire...

Few mormons have served in the US military...no romney ever has...

During the Vietnam war mormon boys were handed deferrments like candy...Romney got at least two...

To the best of my knowledge no mormon leader ever fought in Vietnam or any other battle...

Ya notice the connection betweeen Monson and the US Navy was not explained ??? He only joined the Navy Reserve at the end of WW 2..In 1944 he went to college instead of to the front....

“A couple of years ago when the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit was in San Diego, we drove there. A scroll was found that mentioned “Alma son of Judah” which is the first time the man’s name “Alma” appears in ancient writings. Furthermore, we saw a brass plate on which were written letters. It was very well preserved.”

So, Saundra...

Your argument is that the Book of Mormon is true because
in the Dead Sea Scrolls there is a name that is also used
in the BOM of a different person?

That’s it?

That’s called a coincidence, not factual proof.

How about showing us a curelom?
Or some Jewish DNA?
Or a single scrap of metal from the vast civilization that is said to have been here?
Or a single foundation from a single city that is said to have existed.

You will find more evidence for fairies and trolls than
for anything in the mormonic verses.

What else do you have? Anything?
