Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

A prayer for today:

Recommending liturgical prayer, St. John Vianney would say, “Private prayer is like straw scattered here and there: If you set it on fire it makes a lot of little flames. But gather these straws into a bundle and light them, and you get a mighty fire, rising like a column into the sky; public prayer is like that.”

Lord,
if you will not sweep me away
in a flood of love,
a flood so deep that it will overwhelm me
and cast me up upon the shores of your kingdom,
then make me gentle, supple, yielding,
but strong
so that I may ease and caress the feet of the saints
who walk on me toward your throne.

Oh! Dawg! I love that! Just because...

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I am so happy you were blessed by it.

I'm embarrassed now, ‘cuz I realize my “sleight” should have been “slight” - big difference. LOL! Sorry!

LOL! Probably an answer to your prayer! Typos are universally acknowledged to be helpful toward humility! ;-)

Though I think the only time a typo is really grounds for embarrassment is when someone makes one in a snide comment about someone else's typo!

If you put Jesus first, others second and you last, it equals JOY!

Love that, boatbums!

Thanks for your understanding. It crossed my mind someone would call it a “Freudian Slip”!

Sisters and Brothers:

Evidently I’m so humble that I forgot to be humble yesterday.

So today I have a lot to be humble about. Funny how that works.

In one of the ironies of history, today is the day many Christians celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. AND it is the day we bombed Hiroshima.

Whatever our verdict (or God’s) on bombing Hiroshima, who can deny that humanity is in a sorry state when wreaking such dreadful destruction and death can be entertained as the right thing to do. How dreadful the problem which leads us to consider so dreadful a solution!

When Jesus came down the mountain, he set his face toward Jerusalem, there to be scorned, tortured, and crucified.

How dreadful the problem which led God to so dreadful a solution!

How wonderful the love which embraced that solution to save the lost!

How, one might say, gratuitous the generosity in God’s revealing to a few the glory that was and is the crucified One’s by right and by conquest!

Good morning.

I slept ten hours!

So instead of a ‘message’ I have only thanks to God. A few more nights like that and I’ll be back on an even keel.

Praise God for kindnesses small and great.

Yeah! We had nobody (except a cat) throwing up, and the baby slept from 11 to 5.
