'Mormon' set for spring: Musical from 'South Park' creators opens in April
Variety ^ | Sept. 13, 2010 | Gordon Cox

"The Book of Mormon," the tuner from "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has nailed down its Broadway dates, opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in March.

Plot of the high-profile, long-gestating comedy -- with book, music and lyrics by Parker, Stone and "Avenue Q" composer-lyricist Robert Lopez -- follows a couple of modern-day Mormons in Africa in a storyline intercut with scenes from the life of Joseph Smith.

Parker co-helms with Casey Nicholaw ("Elf"), who also choreographs.

Timing skeds the opening of "Mormon" just prior to the April bow of the 15th season of Parker and Stone's animated skein on Comedy Central.

He does exist which is exactly why Christians need to be better educated on their faith. For example: They need to know why the LDS’ Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not the same as what orthodox Christians believe on the Trinity.

A Christian should not only know the right answers he or she should also know the right questions. Such as asking where in Scripture the idea that Father God has a physical body or that Lucifer and Jesus are Spirit Brothers. Mind you they will do some Scriptural gymnastics to prove this so you must be ready to counter with the whole Nature of God etc, etc apologetic vs the nature of the created angel. Oh and the whole rebellion bit too.

He’s a typical “everybody is out to get me” Mormon. Persecution complex must come with the baptism. I know, because I had it too! LOL

Paranoid is putting it mildly. He’s among those tinfoil lds who expect the storm troopers to come by and haul him away at any moment for being lds.

However I believe that though Blacks could not granted the priesthood (as defined in LDS) because of their color. They could be members.

Come on. "Members" who are temple Mormons, which blacks were denied, get married in temples.

How would you like it if your church leaders said, "No, you can't get married here due to the color of your skin"???

The history of all historical denominations in the U.S are tainted with past racism. Even some denomiations that opposed slavery did not always see Blacks and Whites as fully equal. Most of the Protestant denominations split during the War Between The States. So to condemn LDS because of past racist statements by former leaders is not exactly fair unless you hold all denominations to similar standards.

Past statements by Lds leaders is only part of the problem. IOW, Christian leaders who have made racist statements haven't tried to say their very word was "scripture." That can't be said of various racist verses in the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine & Covenants. See D&C 134:12, for example.

Or Utah Lighthouse Ministry mentions these Book of Mormon verses: Source: http://www.utlm.org/onlinebooks/curseofcain_part1.htm#Racism

And it came to pass that I beheld, after they had dwindled in unbelief they became a dark and loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations (Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 12:23).

And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing . . . wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them (Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 5:21).

Behold the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins . . . (Book of Mormon, Jacob 3:5).

O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought before the throne of God (Book of Mormon, Jacob 3:8).

And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, . . . who were just and holy men . . . and the Lord God set a mark upon them, yea, upon Laman and Lemuel, and also the sons of Ishmael, and Ishmaelitish women.
And this was done that their seed might be distinguished from the seed of their brethren, that thereby the Lord God might preserve his people, that they might not mix and believe in incorrect traditions . . . (Book of Mormon, Alma 3:6).

The Utah Lighthouse Ministry notes: Towards the end of the Book of Mormon one of the righteous leaders, Mormon, declares that in the last days the gospel will again be taken to the Lamanites

that the seed of this people may more fully believe his gospel, which shall go forth unto them from the Gentiles; for this people shall be scattered, and shall become a dark, a filthy, and a loathsome people, beyond the description of that which ever hath been amongst us, yea, even that which hath been among the Lamanites, and this because of their unbelief and idolatry (Book of Mormon, Mormon 5:15).

But I often wonder if the anti-Mormon gang aren’t shooting themselves in the foot with their obsessive and poor behavior. It doesn’t take long to see it. It’s constant.

I don't have a problem with religious leaders speaking about why their religion is right and others are wrong. That's kind of their role. (That doesn't mean I agree with what they say, of course.)

Except you neglect to mention with whose $ this is done: The average person in the pew has funded the slander of the worldwide Christian church made by Lds charlatan leaders for 180 years!!!

Lds publish this stuff. They put it in curricula. They put it online. In their media venues. Via their missionaries. Now who is paying for that?

If Paragon Defender is a tithing member of the Mormon church, he is! He is a rep of the broader # of Mormons who are footing the bill for this slander!

So when are you going to speak up vs. the financial supporters of this nonsense?

You must not have grown up where some people believed that Blacks were the descendants of Ham and therefore cursed.

While America was waiting for the second installment of Star Wars, and watching the Rockford Files on TV, the Mormon religion was teaching that blacks were inferior and not equal equal to a Mitt Romney, or a gregwest.

What was the official teaching that Bishop and Priest Mitt Romney would have been teaching 2 months prior to the “Animal House” movie coming out?

You must be new here.

Not at all. I’ve posted arguments against Mormon theology, but also defended their right to believe as they choose.

Sorry. I didn’t really know but I was mostly being a wise-guy towards the anti-gang. Thanks for your understanding and civility.

So? I don’t think any of their exclusive theology has legitimacy so what they taught about Blacks does not matter to me.

You need to remember that Joseph Smith was a con man, a huckster a flim, flam guy. All such men need a hook to attract their marks. In mid 19th century United States how many people would have given the Book of Mormon a second look if it had passages exalting racial equality and the evils of slavery?

You better believe the issue of what to do with the Negro were at the forefront of our country’s mind during that time. People might be willing to hear that slavery was wrong. They were much less likely to be willing to hear that Negroes were equal. I don’t doubt that Smith had that figured out when penning his tome.

Do you think it odd that the Book of Mormon told that Christ had especially favored our shores with His presence? Was this something the audience wanted to hear? You betcha. Was it a mere coincidence that it came when the fervor from the Second Great Awakening was still in play? Nope. The Book of Mormon was written to appeal to the mainstream national thought of that time.

But the question is not whether LDS is wrong. I think it is. The question is why a certain religion is off limits for even the mildest of criticisms from the media. I can’t wait to hear all the condemnation heaped upon SP for their disregard of the many Mormons who did not fly planes into buildings. Oh you mean they never did? No defense of LDS is required then.

Your point is? This thread is about something that is being shown on Broadway making fun of a particular faith. I find that distasteful.

If you'd like to discuss Mormon teachings, start a thread and invite me to join. I'm sure we'd agree that Mormon doctrine is in error. I don't have the hatred for them that you do, though.
