My post of the month nomination.
I never understood why people got so hot because Lennon said, “imagine.” Just imagine. It isn’t blasphemous, it isn’t irreverent, it’s just a question - what if? Can’t people, even so-called religious people, imagine a concept? Didn’t anyone go to college? Senior year of high school?
I’m sorry he’s dead and I don’t care if he was left, right, or center. And to be worried about some singer/songwriter’s political and religious beliefs some 30 years after the fact is just a waste of time. Go turn on some music and relax.
As always, follow the money. The really great thing about Bob Dylan is that he’s always admitted it was about the money.
John Lennon, though, was about the money, and he knew it was about the money, but he just wouldn’t say it in public.
He made his money pretending to be against making his money.
Pretty cool trick if you can pull it off. But it does have a price. Hypocrisy. The media would be aghast at anyone calling Lennon a hypocrite, but he was.
About Mao, about communism, about peace and harmony, etc. About everything except his rejection of Christ.
Christ is the stone over which men stumble.
While Lennon read a book on Marx, the quartet practiced in the park....
Don McLean had it right.
Very nice music, until Martin made it great. But I don´t think much for almost any of their music once they´d split up.
And Madonna works hard at being a sleaze and slutt. Though I think her music really stinks. PU!
Not even close...and Lennon didn't write it.
Over the following months he baffled those close to him by constantly praising the Lord, writing Christian songs
with titles like Talking with Jesus and Amen (the Lord’s Prayer set to music), and trying to convert
nonbelievers. He also called the prayer line of The 700 Club, Pat Robertson’s program. The change in his life
perturbed Yoko, who tried to talk him out of it. She reminded him of what he’d said about his vulnerability to
strong religious leaders because of his emotionally deprived background. She knew that if the press found out
about it they would have a field day with another John and Jesus story. John became antagonistic toward her, blaming
her for practicing the dark arts and telling her that she couldn’t see the truth because her eyes had been blinded by
Satan.
Those close to the couple sensed that the real reason she was concerned was that it threatened her control over
John’s life. If he became a follower of Jesus he would no longer depend on her and the occultists. During long,
passionate arguments she attacked the key points of his fledgling faith. They met with a couple of Norwegian
missionaries whom Yoko questioned fiercely about the divinity of Christ, knowing that this was the teaching that
John had always found the most difficult to accept. Their
answers didn’t satisfy her, and John began to waver in his commitment.
Martin's first innovation was to record them "raw" in the studio...no overdubs, no back-up of any kind except the levels mix.
4 track.
The Beatles were FAR more talented live they they were in the studio under Martin's OVERBEARING overdubs.
Spot on!
Liked reading this, hope it is true.
I really hope John was saved—I wish I knew...
Seriously - are there any songs more annoying pieces of crap than "Silly Love Songs" and "Wonderful Christmas Time"? Get real. McCartney was and is incapable of cranking out anything but shallow pop tripe. If you don't believe me just grab a copy of "Band on the Run" and have a listen.
It was the team of McCartney and Lennon that made it happen. George Harrison not withstanding, it was Lennon and McCartney constantly pulling in two different directions that gave the Beatles music its sound, and ultimately broke them up.
Paul was and is an excellent musician - his bass work is amazing, and he plays just about any instrument. But his lyric schtick is pop - plain and simple with emphasis on simple.
LOL... oh brother.
The needy, pathetic desire of some on this thread to diss one of the greatest musicians of all time 30 years after his death just goes to show how important he really was.
And who cares that he was an atheist. Freud was a cocaine addict. Mozart was an alcoholic. And Jefferson owned slaves. None of those things lessened the gifts these people gave to us. And it is my firm belief that God Himself will look at their good works, and forgive their failures.
If you know better, then hey, knock yourself out.
Those who have never seen “Spinal Tap” ought really give it a go. Funny movie and there are echoes of John and Yoko in it. Recommended (despite the participation of Leftist idiot, Rob Reiner).
I agree and can say that with certainty, because I actually saw them perform live. With small amps (by today's standards) and limited equipment, they were very, very good live and George Martin was nowhere in sight.
I do too. I don’t wish anyone what awaits them if they don’t.
I guess I fail to understand why ‘Christians’ are much more interested in the lives of famous sinners than ordinary ones.
A Christian has become a new person. Old things are passed away, and all things become new. Personally, none of these balladeers and pretenders, that the ‘world’ labels as ‘stars’, are more special than the averge man on the street.
God calls it being no respecter of persons.
Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse; doesn’t matter how well known they are.
I’m just glad He pulled me out of the mirey clay.
Loved his music hated his politics.
good point, I meant to say something like “post Beatle Beatle” - BTW I am not trying to pick on anyone, I know that there are yet many who are influenced by Lennon et al and want to give another side of the story- thanks for the comment-
