Royal Wedding: Archbishop Backs William and Kate's Decision to Live Together Before Marriage
The Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 4/29/11 | Tim Ross, Jonathan Wynne-Jones and Gordon Rayner

The Archbishop of York has given his backing to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s decision to live together before marriage.

The Archbishop of York backed Prince William and Kate Middleton’s decision to live together before marriage, saying that many modern couples want to “test the milk before they buy the cow”.

Dr John Sentamu argued that the royal couple’s public commitment to live their lives together today would be more important than their past.

But Anglican traditionalists criticised the Archbishop, the second most senior cleric in the Church of England, for failing to reinforce Christian teaching which prohibits sex outside marriage.

The row came as Prince William and Kate Middleton unveiled their choices for the royal wedding service, which include classically British music and hymns, and an updated choice of marriage vows in which the bride omits the word “obey”.

In a television interview, Dr Sentamu was asked whether it was appropriate for the Prince, who is in line to become head of the Church of England as King, to have been living with his bride before marriage.

He said he had conducted wedding services for “many cohabiting couples” during his time as a vicar in south London.

“We are living at a time where some people, as my daughter used to say, they want to test whether the milk is good before they buy the cow,” he said. “For some people that’s where their journeys are.

Those are not my quotes.

Also, Nietzsche is not one to take seriously if your planning to have a comfortable afterlife.

yea yea yea I’m a liberal , get a grip.

I met my wife lived with her , she was Catholic and gave it up and changed, we now have 3 kids, all doing well as we are and we know that life is up and downs especially with kids.

I know what it is like to have kids and be married.

If Jon and Julie wants to live with each other before marriage then it does not affect me or YOU

. I have a 31 year old friend getting married in October. She’s a virgin. She’s also gorgeous and was always pursued by men.

How do you KNOW she was a virgin? You are assuming that she told the truth.

It is about truth. It is not about personal views.

“Do not judge others until you have walked in their shoes.”

Again, I am not judging anyone’s soul. That is the second or third time you have made that false accusation. You seem to be the one judging someone here. I am merely taking people at their word and their actions. Also, I do not have to murder someone to know murder is wrong. So, if I point out the truth - that murder is wrong - I am not judging someone. I am merely telling the truth about a wrongful action.

“Also does it not state in your religion about loving others, respecting others love sinner etc?”

Love of nighbour must ALWAYS include telling them the truth. Pretending the truth is false is not love of neighbour.

You seem to be assuming she didn’t. Besides, I know something she doesn’t even know that I know - and no I am not explaining that here.

Food for thought:

This thread began as commentary about the attitude and comments of a Christian religious leader. I think a little clarification is in order so that we can have a baseline of understanding.

1.) Sex outside of marriage is now and has always been considered a sin in Christian teaching.

2.) Sex outside of marriage is generally accepted by secular society.

3.) Secular thought has been infiltrating Christianity for decades.

4.) The Archbishop of York’s statements are a reflection of that secular infiltration.

Now, much of this thread has veered off into a general discussion of the relative goodness of sex outside of marriage. So, in essence we have two different discussions — one about sex outside of marriage from a practical viewpoint, and one discussion about sex outside of marriage from a Christian viewpoint. So here is the much needed clarification:

One can argue that sex outside of marriage is a good thing from a practical viewpoint (an argument I do not share), but one cannot truthfully state that sex outside of marriage is consistent with Christ’s teachings. Therefore the Archbishop is committing public scandal by his affirmation of shacking up.

I can respect the intellectual honesty of affirming fornication as a secular value.

Affirmation of fornication by a Christian is intellectually dishonest.

Yes, if she believed it was important and moral. I have a 31 year old friend getting married in October. She’s a virgin. She’s also gorgeous and was always pursued by men. A 32 year old friend got married in December 2009.
************************************************

Okay, I was one of the few women that did actually wait until I was married. However, I was 21 years old. There is no way I would still be a virgin until 31.

I also find it funny that you feel the need to explain that she is gorgeous. You know that it sounds weird too, and everyone is wondering what’s wrong with her.

I’m pretty sure that ugly girls have sex too.

I have one. You are the one who seems to be losing it.

“I met my wife lived with her , she was Catholic and gave it up and changed, we now have 3 kids, all doing well as we are and we know that life is up and downs especially with kids.”

And all of that affects the truth how?

“I know what it is like to have kids and be married.”

And again, all of that affects the truth how? Did the earyh become flat when you married? Nope. It stayed the same.

“If Jon and Julie wants to live with each other before marriage then it does not affect me or YOU”

That doesn’t mean anything regarding the truth. Truth doesn’t change just because it affects you or doesn’t affect you.

William must have had a hard time making up his mind whether or not to marry Kate.

Well, she seems to have passed muster. The test drive was a success. Of course, in 10-20 years he gets to trade her in on a newer model.

I said that because I was pointing out: 1) she is pursued all the time, 2) has plenty of opportunity.

“You know that it sounds weird too, and everyone is wondering what’s wrong with her.”

I don’t think so. Mind you, some people here in this thread might think there’s something wrong with her but there seems to be a real dimissive attitude to morality here right now. Those who actually know her do not think she is weird in the least. Maybe that is because her family is devoutly Christian, her workplace is devoutly Christian and her friends are devoutly Christian. All of that helps.

“I’m pretty sure that ugly girls have sex too.”

What’s weird is that you thought it necessary to post that.

So you think a parent should recommend to his daughter that she have sex outside of marriage?

are you for real or a wind up.

Truth is in the eye of the beholder, you think it is truth but others would think they know the truth.

Your problem is that you cannot grasp this logic

Truth is in the eye of the beholder, you think it is truth but others would think they know the truth.

How do you reconcile that statement with the one you made on post #117?

I don't believe HE will look all that unfavorably on us, if for nothing else than the fact that our beautiful daughter loves Him and His Word because of the way she is being raised.

On post #117 you made a claim of belief in the God of Israel, and on post #225 you made a claim of belief in relativism.

Pick one.
