SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – First a controversial book, now Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith is a possible Blockbuster.

Under the Banner of Heaven is an investigative non-fiction book published in 2003. Now, Warner Bros. wants the movie rights.

If Warner Bros. is granted the movie rights, Ron Howard will direct the screen adaptation of Under the Banner of Heaven. When the news came down that this was a possibility Wednesday, it didn’t take long to find an upset Utahn at Temple Square.

“I'm disappointed in that. I'd hate to see the movie produced.”

Jon Krakauer gives historical background into the Mormon faith while telling the story of Ron and Dan Lafferty. They were two Utah brothers who killed their sister-in-law Brenda Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter back in the mid 1980's. This murder is believed to be the consequence of two men who were submerged in extreme, fundamental Mormon beliefs. When the book was released nine years ago, Richard Turley, a leader in the LDS Church told ABC 4, “The real danger is that some people will somehow or another confuse, because of his writing, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Ladder Day Saints with these unconnected Mormon Fundamentalists.”

Ron and Dan Lafferty belonged to the School of Prophets. Here they deepened their so-called Mormon faith. Ron called himself the “Voice of God” and Dan was the self-proclaimed “Arm of God”. This church believed in “revelations”, some of which told them to “remove” people: people like Brenda Lafferty.

“Yes, I think I noted that as a revelation that I received while I was in the school of prophets, yes,” said Ron Lafferty in a Death Row interview with ABC 4...

With the Mormons (to be precise, the members of The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - based in Salt Lake City) intent on being called “Christians” after so many years of eschewing that word, and despite the fact that there are so many fundamental theological differences between Christianity and Mormonism, I often wonder: 

How do members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints feel about calling the members of its various spin-off sects Latter-Day Saints, Christians, or Mormons? Or about those sects calling themselves Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? (There was an earlier campaign by LDS to have journalism style books use the word “Mormon” to refer only to LDS, and not RLDS, FLDS, or other LDS sects).

For a man who bragged about holding things together, Joseph Smith, Jr. doesn’t appear go have done a good job of it during his lifetime. Wycam Clark’s “Pure Church of Christ” spun off in 1831. This trend continued. There were six LDS sects spawned in the 1830s, eight in the 1840s, two in the 1850s, and seven in the 1860s.

Do those responsible for the “Mormons are Christians” campaign consider these denominations to be Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? Surely many of these denominations are much closer to mainstream LDS than LDS is to Christianity. Many stick to Smith’s teachings and old temple endowment ceremonies.

Are members of those LDS groups “Mormons”? “Latter Day Saints?” “Christians?”

Do the folks in Salt Lake City have a problem with any of those groups, who believe in the restoration of the original church by Joseph Smith, calling themselves Mormons or Saints?

Most of these divisions in the Latter-Day Saint movement occurred over the issue of polygamy or succession of the Prophet. Sects broke off when Joseph Smith was still alive, and when Brigham Young was named prophet, because they didn’t believe in the practice of plural marriage – either publicly, or in some cases when it was practiced in private and denied in public.

Of course, there was the great split between Rocky Mountain Saints and Prairie Saints, when LDS members couldn’t agree on a successor prophet to Smith, Jr., and the church went to Utah, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania under Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon (senior member of the First Presidency), James Strang, Lyman Wight, Alpheus Cutler, William Smith, David Whitmer (a BOM witness), or Joseph Smith III (son of Joseph Smith, Jr.). Almost all of these individuals still has multiple sects in existence that date to an 1844 decision about who should be the next President/Prophet of the church.

The Prairie Saints split into sects over the issue of whether Smith practiced polygamy. Rocky Mountain Saints had many, many spinoff sects after the 1890 Manifesto – groups that still practice plural marriage.

Oh. And for “good measure,” two verses later, Joseph Smith puts words in the Mormon god’s mouth saying: “Joseph, my son, IF THOU? livest until thou are eighty-five years old...” (130:15) Say what?

The Mormon god doesn’t even know how old his “prophets” will live to? What? He threw out 85 as a rough guess?...when Smith didn’t even make it to age 40? Why mention it at all?

In the 1830s when Joey Smith penned that the average age for men was less than 65...

When he claimed that his mormon god had promised him that he would see the face of that same mormon god IF he lived until he was 85, Joey Smith was confident that he and his listeners and readers would be long dead and buried and his “prophecy” forgotten by the descendants left behind...

Not many lived to a great age in those days..

That was not wild guessing that he would probably be dead by then and wouldnt have to face the music about his false prophecy...

In 1845 my 5th great grandfather died in Wiltshire England aged 96 but he had been happily married to a SARAH HEATH so that might have made the diffence..

The rest of my male ancestors who died during the 1800s were usually much younger and few lived past 60...

Also Joey Smith lived a dangerous life insulting and flaunting the boundries of the moral climate of the Victorian period he lived in...

The odds of his being shot to death by an irate father or husband or one of his victims he scammed with his get-rich-quick schemes were very high...

It covers...
Joseph Smith (was he a fundamentalist?)
Parley P. Pratt (was he a fundamentalist?)
Brigham Young & the Lds Mountain Meadows Massacre murderers (they certainly weren't fundamentalists!)
Then fast forward to Ron Lafferty, a Highland, UT city councilman (gee, Saundra, I didn't know that Highland regularly elected "fundamentalists" to office there! :) ) Nor did I know that the Mormon church made such "fundamentalists" assistants to the bishop...or youth leaders...like Ron Lafferty was

That only leaves Dan Lafferty, who was a "good Mormon boy" who grew up to take D&C 68:2-4 & 132 literally. (Now what's wrong with that? Tell us Saundra, what's wrong with good Mormon boys taking their D&C expressions literally?)

I don't believe that Dan Lafferty had any known broader associations with any of the traditional fundamentalist groups, other than one guy that shared the 19th century Mormon vision of the "School of Prophets." Nor do I think that any of the Lafferty brothers had multiple wives, almost a "requirement" amongst those fundamentalist groups!

9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
   
10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
    
11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
    
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
    
13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. Oh really - such a glib dismissial. The probably felt the same burning in the bosom you did, received a similar 'confirmation' by the 'holy ghost', you did. Believed the bom to be truth like you do, believe joseph smith to be the prophet like you do.

(I'm not sure if the victims, relatives, descendents & relatives' descendents have ever "felt the love" of Mormons & Mormon leaders, especially those who have generationally - continually - denied their bodily remains a proper burial and a proper cross atop their sites of massacre. The Mormons were the perpetrators. The Mormon leaders were the 'cover-ups.' And the ensuing leaders never did square up and deal directly with their spiritual ancestors' role in this atrocity. It's almost like going to the least of the concentration camps in Germany -- only to find the Germans there conceding a very limited tie to how that camp got there).

As for what's "all over," well, the bones of those 120 victims are still "all over" parts of Mountain Meadows.

Notice the AVOIDANCE of the FACTS of MORMONism.
