Tens of thousands wait for hours in freezing temperatures to kiss belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother

MOSCOW — Braving freezing cold temperatures and ice-covered sidewalks, tens of thousands of Russians stood in line Wednesday to see and kiss a newly arrived relic of the Virgin Mary in Russia's largest Orthodox cathedral.

The Virgin Mary's Cincture, a belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother, was brought to Russia last month from Mount Athos, a monastic community in Greece.

Kissing the relic, which is encased in an ornamental box, is believed to help barren women conceive and heal other ailments.

The line of people, mostly women, waiting to enter the golden-domed Christ the Savior Cathedral stretched for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the Moscow River despite temperatures that dropped to below minus 5 Celsius (23 Fahrenheit).

I’ll tell you what’s VILE: a religious organization built on deceit, lies, paganism, another Jesus, another gospel, another spirit, another way to heaven beside the finished work of Christ, works for salvation, the deplorable performance of “changing” wafers and wine into the body and blood of our Saviour. Who prays to saints for intercession, who prays to Mary for graces, who believe that she was sinless, who pray to the dead, for the dead, and believe that a man can retain or remit their sins. THAT’S VILE. And THAT church began in the Garden of Eden. And will end as Rev.17 and 18 say.
Wow, somebody has her panties in a twist!

Uh, no. Wrong once again. That church began before the Upper Room time. So, you’re saying the Church began on the night before the day of Pentecost? Just like you say that Christ actually poured out His blood on the night before the day of His crucifixion? Interesting how things in your religion happen the night before...

>> WHY would Jesus give mere men the power to not forgive sins?<<

He didn’t. He gave them the “keys” which were symbolic of the keys the Jewish rabbis used to open the storage area for the scrolls which gave them the power and authority to teach Gods word. He also gave them the authority to bind and loose what would be taught in the churches. If someone began to teach something contrary to scripture it was bound and not allowed to be taught.

Well, I thank you for the answers as you understand Scripture to say. It is an honest confession of what you believe and I do not and will not ever fault anyone for such, even though I disagree with them.

I will have to respond later to this because I haven’t enough time now.

But, truly, CB, thank you for respecting me enough to take the time to answer rather than throw out deflections.

I thank the Lord for you.

****Ah. traditions again. Never mind what the word of God PLAINLY STATES*****

If it is so plainly stated, how is it that you thought it said church and not numbers or unto them?

When all else fails, attack. It is the protestant tradition.

Bashing the Church over and over with the same silliness seems to have more appeal than peddling Dispensationalism™ to those who might actually fall for it.

Your posts indicate a lack of confidence in your teachers.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)

Do you have scripture to show us where we should do that or is that an assumption? I know we can have living people pray for us but I have never seen scripture that tells us that those who have died should do that. Please don’t use that made up assumption that all are one body nonsens. That’s only the assumption I was talking about.

Some seem so much more energized by what they are against than what they’re for.

I’m sure there’s a deep psychological meaning in this..

I think all are clear on what you do not believe.

What is less clear is what you DO believe. Do you even know? Why are you afraid to say so by answering a very simple question? I gave you my answer. I agree with Christians of all traditions. The Church began on the Day of Pentecost.

When do you say that the Church began?

What I am still amazed by is the fact that these dozen or so nasty haters come onto a Russian Orthodox thread to spread their lies and ignorant hatred of the Catholic Church. Go figure!

Matt. 18:17: "And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto THE CHURCH; but if he neglect to hear THE CHURCH let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican."

Matthew seems to disagree with you. They were added unto them, unto whom, the Church. That Christ talked about in Matt. 18:17. THe Church was made up of the Little Flock of believers. The KINGDOM CHURCH. THAT WAS ADDED TO ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST.

I apologize for my participation in this. I swore off the FR for several months, but happened to open the thread, due to my interest in the Russian Church. Then I waded into the mire once again.

It is truly a total waste at best and a temptation to sin for me.

Going back on the wagon.

Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem;
Creatorem caeli et terrae.

Et in Jesum Christum,
Filium eius unicum, Dominum nostrum;
qui conceptus est
de Spiritu Sancto,
natus ex Maria virgine;
passus sub Pontio Pilato,
crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus;
descendit ad inferos;
tertia die resurrexit a mortuis;
ascendit ad caelos;
sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis;
inde venturus est
iudicare vivos et mortuos.

Credo in Spiritum Sanctum;
sanctam ecclesiam catholicam;
sanctorum communionem;
remissionem peccatorum;
carnis resurrectionem;
vitam aeternam. Amen.

In English:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary,
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
he will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

>>What, we need SPONSORS to get into heaven?<<

They don’t trust that Jesus was powerful enough or would actually listen to us when He said that He was an advocate for us with the Father. When He said “no one goes to the Father but by me” they thought He wasn’t good enough to remember what they wanted.

And that quote from Luther tells us the scriptural reference where we are taught to pray to her...where?

You need to post your “one trick pony” graphic to yourself.
