How to be a Jack Mormon
The Cultural Hall Podcast ^ | June 9, 2012 | Carli

A Jack Mormon is someone who is Mormon, but ”trouble.”

They are somewhere in between baptism and excommunication. If they even show up to church, they’re merely in the door, not on the stand, but also not escorted out. Foyer sitters.

(That’s how I’ve heard the term used anyway.)

In order to be a successful Jack Mormon, you need to incorporate multiple items from the following list into your life:

Are Jack Mormons a misunderstood part of Mormon culture? Or are Jack Mormons simply misinformed about what’s appropriate in Mormon culture?

Jack Mormons are a mormon group that are included in the membership numbers (14 million plus) put out by the mormon church.

I would include in the group the thousands who have been baptized mormon but have not set foot in a church for decades, like about 75 of my relatives.

I think the most notable thing about this list is that it is a list of things that are either doctrinally forbidden or frowned on by the "true blue mormons"....much has to do with one's appearance...piercings, long hair on men, short skirts, flip flops (sorry Mitt), don't clap to show approval in church, and of course no coffee, tea or alcohol.

Really, Jesus would NOT find a welcome in a mormon chapel, and He would certainly be denied entrance to a mormon temple.

“Jack mormon” is short for “jack ass mormon” according to my mormon friends.

Regardless of religion, what you described doesn’t seem very attractive or appealing. I can’t see how any of it would be helpful to these people in their work, schooling, or as community leaders.

I had a “Jack Mormon” friend in Vietnam. He was one of the finest “Grunts” I ever knew. No one in our Platoon would have traded him for anything.

Marco Rubio could be described as a "Jack Mormon".

Sen. Marco Rubio was baptized as a Mormon at age 8,With Sen. Rubio on the ticket, Mitt could garner all the TBM AND and Jack Mormon votes.

All my Jack Mormon relatives and friends are ideal citizens...just not good mormons. Not one will ever be a bishop.

No but I never ran across Barack Hussein Obama, either.

I believe that Obama would have to be considered a Jack Muslim.

The Jack Mormons I have met were an unhappy bunch. I didn’t think of them as Mormons, but as people who really disliked Mormons. Much of the time they had a cigarette in their fingers and a cola soft drink or coffee in their hand.

Kind of an “I want to be an anti-Mormon” countenance, yet a sense of failure because they couldn’t think of any more rules to break.

Several of the girls had suicide attempt scars on their wrists.

Noteworthy that several of them mentioned their family became Mormon in the first place in hopes of getting free stuff. Religious welfare and food stamps.

Juxtaposed with real Mormon kids, Jacks just came across as “sad”.

Yep, those Muslims and Mormons are one in the same.

Excellent post. Always happy to see the welcoming and forgiving attitude of mormons in black and white.

Now, the Christian churches I have attended would have been welcoming to these "sad" folks with an entirely different viewpoint. For instance, welcoming them to our church's food pantry, offering financial help if needed...and for those "girls who had suicide attempt scars on their wrists" a warm welcome would be forthcoming by our youth leader and the young people to those who had been in such despair.

"Juxtaposed with real Mormon kids, Jacks just came across as “sad”. Your post is self-explanatory.

You'd be surprised.

There was an event on 9/11 in 1857 which might interest you. If you are interested.

I once opined that a certain prominent political figure was a “jack Mormon”, and was told I didn’t know what I was talking about. After all, he shaved and wore a suit, a pretty expensive one at that. Fact was, he had joined LDS for purely social reasons and to buttress his political ambitions.

I still maintain nobody can be both a “good Mormon” and a liberal Democrat at the same time. There are just too many glaring gaps in doctrine to provide much overlap.

The original term “Jack Mormon”, was a non Mormon who lived among the LDS and conformed but was not a member.

My father smoked and drank, as did many of his peers, considered himself LDS and never wanted any FREE Stuff.

I am a proud Apostate. Keeping my name on the rolls is making it possible to proudly show the world what a “Good Mormon” looks like: The kind you can stand to be around!

I also love to answer the “are you lds” question with: “Not so’s you’d notice”.

Also to be fair to the topic of the thread I must add.

Jack Mormons don’t know jack.

That’s very lame. Go grasp at straws somewhere else.

Enough.
