SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mormons are free to down a Coke or Pepsi.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has clarified its position on caffeinated soft drinks, noting the news media often incorrectly states that its members don't drink caffeine.

Sweetie, you read the story in full context.
You want to have polygamy acceptable apparently for your personal reasons be my guest, it is not Biblical.
God defined marriage in the OT and NT, if you have a problem with that take it up with God.

This kind of concern concerns me. I have two sisters-in-law that live seven hundred miles apart and have seen each other, perhaps, three times in this dimension. Both of them eschew caffeine. They are both Catholic, devout, I would say.

Either way, caffeine seems pretty benign as vices go.

Nevertheless, Mormons allowing it or proscribing it, either way, it's OK with me.

If it violated some tenet of Catholicism, you could sure count on a pro-caffeine caucus at any Democrat convention.

Partly right about temple attendance; not entirely.

Not paying a (privately self-declared) 10% tithing, not regularly attending church meetings, not living the church's "Word of Wisdom" health code(i.e., by smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol and/or coffee, abusing drugs) - these will disqualify one from Temple attendance (not from regular church meeting attendance in Chapels, of course).

However, simplying marrying or being married to a person of another faith has no disqualifying effect on the person's being to attend Temples herself/himself.

And yes, it is correct that only those meeting the standards of Temple attendance are able to attend any Temple sessions. Temples are not regular houses for Sunday worship; in fact they are closed on Sundays which is when regular worship services are held in congregational chapels.

Wasn’t there a picture of Romney buying caffeine free cherry coke and regular diet coke while on vacation or something like that? But what do I care about his choice of caffeine or no caffeine— Barry admits to snorting his coke.

The coffee didn’t have anything to do with it, it was because he was not temple worthy.
Only about 15% of mormons receive the classification “temple worthy”.

I'm voting for Paul Ryan so all this Mormon crap is superfluous—unless you are for Obama.

Good grief. This is the religion forum, IE discussion of religion.
Discussing religion does not translate to voting for obama, my lord repeating that “unless you are for obama” is really boring.

My vote is going to be for Romney, not his church. No church is mentioned on the ballot.

which is a source of high fructose corn syrup, which is extremely bad for you.

From the body's perspective, HFCS is just another source of glucose.

Relax, all threads are fair game unless you include in the headline a “THIS IS THE RELIGION FORUM SO NO SECULAR COMENTS ARE PERMITTED” disclaimer.

...ever heard of the Ist Amendment or are you endorsing censorship?

A few yrs ago Mitt was on the Howie Carr show (Boston conservative talk host—he was an early promoter of his gov candidacy etc.) and Mitt had to admit that once in awhile (he actually said this) when he’s in a rambunctious mood, he will dare to treat himself to a Vanilla Coke.

Weird. I lived in Provo and SLC, and it was always made clear to me that it wasn’t caffeine, it was tannins. Of course I was never convinced that soda pop had tannins, but coffee and tea, I suppose so.

You’re correct....growing up as a Catholic kid, we weren’t supposed to eat meat on Fridays. That was changed years ago.

We’re still supposed to avoid meat on Fridays during Lent, however.

Catholics used to have to eat fish on Friday.”

When I was in high school (many years ago) we always had fish for lunch on Friday in the school cafeteria, no meat of any kind - and it was a public high school. Never thought it was strange and don’t know that we even thought about it being a Catholic thing. Can’t imagine that happening in this day and age though.

Wal Mart generally carries "real Coke" [made in Mehico] that is sweetened with cane sugar.

It comes in the tall glass bottles and is either in the "international foods" aisle, or with the other soda.

I wouldn’t say He had no problem with it, you can read the OT stories and when husbands had multiple wives it caused numerous problems, ie jealousy between siblings and wives, even murder.
