Afterlife Exists Says Top Brain Surgeon
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ ^ | October 10, 2012 | Mark Hughes

Posted on 10/10/2012 6:43:29 AM PDT by Biggirl

Dr Eben Alexander, a Harvard-educated neurosurgeon, fell into a coma for seven days in 2008 after contracting meningitis. During his illness Dr Alexander says that the part of his brain which controls human thought and emotion "shut down" and that he then experienced "something so profound that it gave me a scientific reason to believe in consciousness after death." In an essay for American magazine Newsweek, which he wrote to promote his book Proof of Heaven, Dr Alexander says he was met by a beautiful blue-eyed woman in a "place of clouds, big fluffy pink-white ones" and "shimmering beings".

There have been so many documented cases of NDE’s - Near Death Experiences. Don’t understand why it isn’t more scientifically accepted.

We are all souls with a body. Not a body with a soul.

I do believe HEAVEN is TRULY for REAL.

I don't think that's what this guy was dealing with.

Do you remember that loud bang that was heard in the first Romney-Obama debate? I never heard an explanation of what caused it.

After the wake of my best friend, I went to his house and family and we all heard this loud bang that reverberated throughout the house. We all looked at each other and said what was that?

A psychic told me later it was my friend acknowledging his presence and appreciation. I remember Ann Romney saying that they believe Romney’s dad is always with him.

I just made that connection during the debate since it happened to us. I believe George Romney was showing his love and pride for his son, and I believe it’s just another sign that Mitt Romney will become president.

saw this guy on 'Through the Wormhole' with Morgan Freeman.

he also said that he was a butterfly flying with millions of other butterflies when he started to regain consciousness

I do not call that afterlife as he was never dead...it was meningitis where the brain swells up...and when the brain swells up it is damaged more or less....

I do not deny an afterlife....I just don't see this guy as having performed a scientific study.

Yep.

Steven Covey quoted somebody in his 7 habits book that went something like ‘We are not human beings living in a spiritual world, we are spiritual beings living in a human world’.

Made me think a lot.

"I do believe HEAVEN is TRULY for REAL."

I agree with you Biggirl. It is the physical universe that is an illusion.

I do believe that much of what we consider our “mind” is not related to our brains. There’s a variety of evidence to suggest that’s the case.

I found the book "Quantum Physics, Near Death Experiences, Eternal Consciousness, Religion, and the Human Soul" (I know, quite a title!) by William Joseph Bray to be an unevenly written and sometimes difficult read. But it offered the most reasoned and consistent explanation I have so far found for what this reality and physical universe is and is not).

One element in the book explains that any description someone might bring "back" after an NDE must be expressed in the limited terms of the tools at hand (the human brain and language) in this universe. We perceive and physically seem to "live" within a linear time frame that is created micro-moment to micro-moment by the act of our conscious observation and we have no words and only very rough analogous imagery that can convey the experience. The images of a tunnel, gardens, rivers, etc. are translations of things which cannot otherwise be described or expressed.

"Heaven" is not only real but is the timeless infinite from which the observation is made. Another point he makes (the writer is a Christian) is that the only human religion which is 100% for certain NOT true is Atheism.

I wonder if the author explores the moral ramifications of his experiences?

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilites, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.” -C.S. Lewis

“I remember Ann Romney saying that they believe Romney’s dad is always with him”

Any scriptural support for that position? I see it as the same fallacy that we turn into “guardian angels” when we die. Completely unsupported, and in fact heretical (not a pejorative, just an observation).

An amusing coincidence:
The doctor’s name is Eben, which is short for Ebenezer. Reminds me of a fictitious Ebenezer who received visions that dramatically changed his outlook.

A friend of mine in the music ministry has given me the adult version of the book, “Heaven is for Real” to read.

Our physical existence is designed such that we sense nothing int he actual present of the event. An easy example is the starlight the eye receives when you look into the clear night sky. Because we sense only past events, our brain 'holography' projects a coherent flow to the events we collect data over, and convinces our soul (the none physical part of our life) that we are flowing with time.

The human conceptualization of dimension Time may be the problem which holds us back from conceptualizing a better notion of wht it means to be 'alive' ... the soul exists in a 'greater-than-linear' spacetime reality yet is fed data collected from a linear temporal framework of our perception, even though events are occurring in a greater-than-linear spacetime reality. The data feed is so loud that our soul is tricked into believing reality is a linear progression, yet we have an aspect of each of us which exists in 'greater-than-linear' reality.

As Alamo_Girl is known to write, without space things do not exist, and without time events do not occur. Just imagine what 'things' and 'events' are possible in a reality which has temporal expressions of planar and volumetric expression alongside linear temporal expression!

this belief of being in heaven moments following death contradicts scripture.
in a number of verses death is referred to as a state of unconscious sleep where we will all be awakened to be judged

But you do know that when we go home to God, we are changed.

No eyeglasses, no arthritis, no canes, no wheelchairs, no heart disease, cancer, etc. We will have new bodies.

Read the book “Heaven is for Real”. That confirms what the Bible does say.

Death of the body is written of as a ‘sleep’ ... in Thessalonians Paul refers to the soul God will bring with Him to be united to new bodies (the dead in Christ shall rise first, in body, but their soul God will be bringing back with Christ to get that new body), and those who are alive and remain will be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, to meet the Lord in the air ...
