Many progressive Catholics remain in the Church only because they have found refuge on college campuses where the long arms of a bishop cannot reach, writes Fr. Richard McBrien, the Crowley-OBrien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, in his latest screed against the Vatican and the U.S. bishops.
Father McBrien writes in The National Catholic Reporter that ultra-conservatives are staging a wholesale assault on nuns for the soul of the Church. And McBrien is also looking forward to the next pope who, he predicts, will lead the Church more in line with his own progressive vision for the Church.
Oh, and he compares himself to Moses.
The nuns have been in the forefront of the struggle to keep the spirit and the letter of the Second Vatican Council alive writes Father McBrien. Unfortunately, LCWR is a scapegoat for everything the right wing in the Catholic [C]hurch loathes. One should recognize that ultra-conservatives exist in the highest ranks of the Vatican, excluding no ecclesiastical office in the [C]hurch.
He writes that while the nuns celebrate Vatican II, ultra-conservatives have staged a terrible backlash on Vatican II and are currently waging a wholesale assault on the nuns in the United States.
He blames Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI of undermining the Council by appointing of bishops and archbishops unfriendly to it. Among those responsible for the terrible backlash McBrien includes:
Examples of such bishops are (with the diocese and year they were first ordained a bishop): Thomas Welsh, Arlington, Va., 1970 (now deceased); Thomas Daily, Brooklyn, N.Y., 1974 (now retired); Nicholas DiMarzio, Brooklyn, 1996; David Ricken, Green Bay, Wis., 2000; Richard Lennon, Cleveland, 2001.

He is dancing on the TRAPDOOR of HELL!! REPENT and change your way, “Fr,” O’Brien!!
In Mr O'Brien we see yet another believer in "The Nine Suggestions".
Sometimes I wish the Obama threat to our institutions were yet more forceful, predatory, arrogant and radical, so we could lose to the Secular Power all those who are really just longing to be secular anyway, and the faithful remant (stalwartly remaining Catholic with a capital C and suffering for a time) would finally survive and triumph.
He is in danger of losing his immortal soul
This is a little hard for me to understand, but from what I have seen, many nuns are leading an assault against the Church.
I miss the Nuns who used to teach me. Nuns in habits who loved God and not the prpmotion of their own views.
I’m a Baptist, where each congregation is responsible for its leadership. However, given Catholic teaching, why is this man still a Catholic?
Years ago, I was in a church where a guy kept backstabbing the deacons and pastor at every chance. He would go around talking to new or prospective members and complain. So finally, after several warnings, he was thrown out & told not to enter the church again. He then went to another congregation and started doing the same thing. They were warned by our example and threw him out after one warning.
Folks who live to create confusion and bitterness are NOT believers. I don’t understand how this man can claim to be Catholic.
What is this assault on the nuns he talks about?
It is common knowledge on the campus at Notre Dame that McBrien has been living off-campus with a concubine for years.
It’s hard to believe that his religious superiors and the local bishop are not aware of this.
Yes, there are benefits to persecution.
There are some groups of nuns who no longer uphold the Catholic Church’s beliefs. The Pope has asked them to fill out a response to his questions. I hope they all get thrown out for not fulfilling their original intent.
How did creeps like this sneak into the Catholic Universities? This man is a make-it-up as you go Catholic. He doesn’t believe in following the lead of Jesus Christ. He sounds like a Jesuit. I certainly wish he would admit he is not really a Catholic instead of trying to steer the Church in the wrong direction.

He thinks any attempt by Rome to oversee them is an assault.

These aren't the saintly women who dedicated their lives to educating children with a firm but loving hand that we think of when we think "nun". They are radical feminists that have publicly broken with the Church position on homosexuality, contraception, and other issues. They have openly thumbed their noses at the church hierarchy. Recently they went on a bus tour to protest the Ryan budget and campaign for "social justice" (i.e. stealing my money for their causes) and then their leader made a big speech at the DNC convention.
From the Bible:
Numbers 16:3 And when they had stood up against Moses and Aaron, they said : Let it be enough for you, that all the multitude consisteth of holy ones, and the Lord is among them : Why lift you up yourselves above the people of the Lord ?
He sounds more like Core and his crowd who claimed each person was their own highest authority in all things.
What God thinks of that heresy is here:
Numbers 16:33 And they went down alive into hell, the ground closing upon them, and they perished from among the people.
The fact that the Bishops in this country don't keep this guy and others like him out of universities shows just how corrosive and corrupting the culture in this country is.
The state this country is in makes you wonder how the majority of the people in this country have the gall to call themselves Christian. Even a lot of those who talk a good game go along to get along rather than confronting the decadence atheist media manipulators and fascist democrat politicians have been forcing into society for the past eighty years.
Soetoro claims to be an American and people believe him.
He’s “out of reach” on that campus because
a) he is a Diocesan priest of Hartford who has been pontificating from Indiana for decades, so not answerable to anyone but himself,
b) he’s at Notre Dame, who welcomed Obama with a red carpet, and supports him,
c) we’ll see, but I think the recently appointed Bishop of Fort Wayne, IN, even though he is reputed to be orthodox, certainly will not be able to change McBrien and Notre Dame.
I think the Church’s only option (and I’ve thought this for a while) is that they have to take radical action (like they are doing with the feminist sisters) and just tell them “Shape up or ship out” - if you want to be Catholic you can’t be “katholic” (sounds the same, but it ain’t).
Just to let you know, there are devout Christians who do live in this country, but you have to remember, sadly, a lot of these devout Christians do live in FEAR or simply just do not KNOW where to start.
Also this stuff has been going on for decades. Sucessful clean-up cannot be done overnight.
With this year being the year of faith, I do have a lot of hope that change for the better will take place.
