Pray For Our American Heroes and Our Nation (2/8/2013)

Greater love has no one than this:
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
John 15:13 (NIV)

On February 14th, we recognize St. Valentine’s Day as a day to celebrate love. And the cards and gifts exchanged for that holiday are often with the theme of romantic love.

But may we recognize the greatest love – God’s love for us and sending His Son to give His life to save us. And laying down one’s life to save a friend, countryman, or even a stranger is a heroic act a soldier is willing to do - everyday.

Heavenly Father –

Thank you for Your amazing, tender, pursuing love toward us.

As Jesus taught us when asked:

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

In our age of propaganda, obfuscation, moral ambiguity, verbosity, we thank you, Father, for Your succinct, moral clarity about the law and the commandments, summed up in one word – love. We praise You for your abiding love and patience toward us.

As Jesus has said – if you love Me, keep My commands. (John 14:15) We ask for mercy, Father, on our country for not loving You, none-the-less obeying Your commands. Pour out Your Spirit on the land and give us a heart for repentance. May we be awakened to see our spiritual poverty and our dire need for You and Your forgiveness.

Thank you, Father, for our brave men and women who demonstrate this amazing love by risking their lives so we may live - and live as free men and women. Bring all Your servants safely through danger. Comfort all those who mourn for the sacrifice of their loved ones. As the Great Physician, may Your healing hand touch all the wounded warriors and their loved ones. May we all be grateful as a nation for their self-less service to others and model their example.

In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting glory and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

In like manner, let our prayers now rise lie a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and keep them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

Heavenly Father, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these brave men and women who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the Freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your countenance to shine upon them, and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. OH LORD, as I read this verse, I thought about our kids, remembering when they were little playing soldier with their GI Joe dolls. They played hard, felt strong, feared little, because they knew they were home with their parents and were safe. This was the beginning of the spark to grow up and become men and women who will truly fight for that which they love…GOD FAMILY COUNTRY…OH LORD, keep them close to YOU. May they realize that every sacrifice that is wrapped in faith, hope and love, is a gift that mirrors CHRIST…for HE is the epitome of the most PERFECT SACRIFICE of LOVE..Amen. Watch over especially my boy, Jake…and care for our friend Alek…Thank YOU, LORD. Amen.
