When the next Papal Conclave meets behind closed doors to replace the retiring Pope Benedict XVI, the United States will have an unprecedented voice in the process. Eleven cardinal electors, almost 10 percent of the conclave, will be Americans -- the largest share the country has ever had, even though it has historically had a large Catholic population. The retiring pope gets credit for the greater influence of the U.S.

Good Grief...When’s the last time we had a “Pope Gone Wild”. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

It will be an interesting conclave to say the least.

Obama found some dirt on the Vatican and threatened to expose it. In exchange for guarantees of silence, the current pope will resign and the next pope will be the first black pope.

And pray as well they select a strong Pope; not a politically correct one.

So, they underlying tenet of this is that the USA will be influential in electing the first “black pope?” Gee, we all know how well that worked out here in 2008....

While these cardinals are all from the US, they are not participating in the conclave to represent US values. Electing a Pope is not a patriotic duty.

As usual there isn’t really a good connection here between headline, story and reality.

Thank you, Thank you!

Saves me from having to say it. The Americans are probably the most liberal of all. Although, Marxists are all over the world high in the church. For me, it's always worrysome to change Pope's. Until I see the pick, I worry that this will be the change agent we have dreaded. A little pressure from Kerry, Biden, Pelosi, and Kennedy's, and bada bing bada boom, abortion isn't quite as bad as we thought and sodomizing children is just loving them in a special way. Oh, and how about those new women priests?

I’ll guarantee you that US policy will have NO influence other than the rejection of most of US policy from the next Pope.

I personally think the next pope is going to be Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco from Genoa since he is very much like Pope Benedict XVI

Since Latin America has about 43% of the world’s catholics, does that mean they have 43% of the cardinals? (I’m not Roman Catholic, so I don’t know.)

If so, could they team with the 10+% of North Americans (Canada?) to control the selection?

Finally, is there a truly conservative cardinal anywhere in the Americas?
