(MENAFN - Arab News) An envoy from Al-Azhar in Cairo, raised the prospect of restoring ties with the Vatican yesterday but called on Pope Francis to take "a step forward" by declaring that Islam is a peaceful religion.
"The problems that we had were not with the Vatican but with the former pope. Now the doors of Al-Azhar are open," Mahmoud Abdel Gawad, diplomatic envoy to the grand imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, told Italian daily Il Messaggero in Cairo.
"Francis is a new pope. We are expecting a step forward from him. If in one of his addresses he were to declare that Islam is a peaceful religion, that Muslims are not looking for war or violence, that would be progress in itself," he said.
A ceremony in March, in which Pope Francis washed the feet of young inmates in Rome, including a Muslim girl, was "a gesture that was very, very much appreciated" by Al-Azhar, Gawad said.

I would love for the Pope to say something like “I cannot declare another person as anything. They declare themselves through their actions. We are all known by our fruits.”

Whatever anyone may think of the new pontiff, he shows no signs of being either stupid-as-sh@@ or corrupt. He’ll “declare Islam peaceful” just as soon as pigs start flying.
The Pope should say that the only way to mend Vatican ties is for Muslims to allow the construction of a big Catholic church complex in Mecca.
Anything else is typical, lying, self-serving Muslim bullsh!t.

The Islamic Turks have been denying their Slaughter of Armenian Christians for years. Why they can’t just acknowledge their history a d move forward is troublesome. Because it implies they’re ready to do it again. This is the same problem with Shoah deniers or those that try to deny the nszi or communist slaughters of millions of other people The dead remain dead at any event. The living were t killed. What deniers are saying is that they want to kill more people. This is a serious problem. And unlike Israel (which can turn its enemies into instant parking lots anytime it is too seriously threatened or just finally provoked) Armenia is a pretty weaki little country and thus feels l the more venerable to Islamic threats
