Vladimir Putin claims Russia is moral compass of the world
The Telegraph ^ | 12 December 2013 | Damien McElroy

Vladimir Putin sought to cast Russia as the moral arbiter of the world on Thursday, as he hit out at America’s “non-traditional values” and its influence across the world. In an annual state of the nation address, the 61-year-old Russian president said his country did not aspire to be “some kind of superpower”. “We do not infringe on anyone’s interests, we do not force our patronage on anyone, or try to teach anyone how to live,” he said. His comments amounted to an oblique rebuttal to the growing international movement against Russia’s restrictive laws on homosexuality. ... Mr Putin defended his government’s increasingly conservative values and decried the “review of norms of morality” in the West and elsewhere.

“This destruction of traditional values from above not only entails negative consequences for society, but is also inherently anti-democratic because it is based on an abstract notion and runs counter to the will of the majority of people,” Mr Putin said, adding there could be no benefit for society for treating “good and evil” equally. In his 70-minute televised speech from an ornate Kremlin hall, Mr Putin said traditional family values where a bulwark against “so-called tolerance – genderless and infertile.” Critics of the speech were quick to point that post-Soviet Russia has seen a deep and damaging decline in its birth rates to among the lowest of any developed nation....

The article is rather snarky, and Putin is surely a brute--but he does claim to be a Christian...and he does uphold explicitly Christian values in Russia (much like the old Czars used to do...brutally). I think he has a real point about the West, and, the USA.

Yes he does and I am glad he is speaking about it, no one in the GOP would.

What a strange world we live in.

He upholds Christian values because, traditionally, the church (both Orthodox and Roman Catholic) functions as an arm of the State, dating back to the NKVD.

He's simply looking-out for his "friends."

I would have to disagree with Mr. Putin.

In the East there is someone that causes the western liberal's maniacal laughter to stop. Vladimir Putin. He has real world power, which causes the liberal media to fearfully ignore or warp his image. Like a good Christian King he leads a nation to Christ. Deep down in their evil souls they shriek like devils because they know Christ is true God and true power that they cannot defeat. They thought the Bolshevik revolution destroyed Holy Mother Russia. Christ cannot be defeated and his servant Putin has welcomed Christ and His church.

The anti-Christian Obama has allied himself with Al-Qaeda rebels in Syria where 2 Bishops are still held captive, priests and other Christians are martyred. This is the "Hope and Change" he promised. Those who voted for Obama are held responsible as though they pulled the trigger or swung the blade to decapitate. It will go worse for those who are Christian leaders who ignore the martyrs of the East. Why are they not at the White House everyday protesting to spare the Christians and stop the violence?

How's this for a fish story: In the latest episode of Vladimir Putin's ongoing rugged outdoorsman fantasy adventure series, the Russian president, clad in a camouflage jacket and hat, appears to catch a massive pike...Russia's defense minister, who was on the trip, says the fish weighed between 26.4 and 33 pounds, but a Putin spokesman pegs the weight at 46.3 pounds. Russian bloggers are for some reason a tad skeptical. Several have posted images of bigger fish they've caught themselves that have weighed far less. "They must have forgotten to unfreeze the pike," one social network post quipped. Another wrote, "The Kremlin must have weighed the pike the way they count the votes." Come on guys. It's not like Putin would fake a spectacular exploit.

Sadly, there is an element of truth to the point. Who is standing for the Christians of Syria, and who is helping the attackers?

Interesting. I wonder what Putin’s reasoning was when he funneled Russian arms to the Syrians, and the Syrians in turn were funneling them into Iraq.

Putin and his his Russian Nationalist supporters say and do things that support Christianity and traditional non Communist Russian moral values and protect Russians, while showing respect for Russian law and procedures. Some of the speeches and personal appearances are rhetoric and optics, while others are undeniably statesmanship. We will have to wait to be sure of what Putin finally accomplishes for Russia and elsewhere.

Obama and regime Democrats say they support Christianity and American moral values, but they only do things that undermine and destroy those values and promote and finance the strengthening of Socialism, Islam and authoritarian appointed government, while showing no respect for Rule of Law, undermining the American economy and fomenting violent insurrection in numerous foreign nations while supporting known terrorists. Here, we don't have to wait to be sure that a sincere law abiding Christian benevolent President accomplishes justice in America, Obama assures us he will.

Actually that close relationship goes back to the Tsars who imported Caesaropapism from the Byzantines.

He was probably thinking: What's good for Russia is good; what's bad for Russia is bad. Similarly, what's bad for Russia's competitors (EU, US, etc.) is good; what's good for Russia's competitors is bad.

The problem, as I see it, is the US is now devolving to the same calculus since "...we are no longer a Christian nation..."

Russia is a far more moral country than many other places except in one regard. Abortion. Russia has one of the highest abortion rates anywhere and they’re suffering for it. I’m glad to see many lawmakers and religious leaders in Russia have said its time to start cracking down on the abortion industry for the good of the country.

Russia has claimed to be the moral compass of the world calling itself the Third Rome; home of the leadership of the Christian world. First of course Rome itself, then Constantinople when the Eastern and Western Churches split, finally Moscow when Constantinople fell in 1453.
