Pastor Tim Christensen of Gold Hill Lutheran Church in Montana was put in a difficult situation on Sunday morning.

...49ers fan Pastor Christensen decided to perform a one-minute service then rush out to catch the game on television.

"Would you all like to be forgiven for your sins? OK, that's great. You are," before adding "there's some bread and some wine up here on the table. Feel free to help yourself if you'd like to."

Opening up his vestment to reveal a 49ers T-shirt, the pastor then shouts, "I'm out of here".

The NFL season wreaks havoc on attendance at our Sunday evening Mass. Attendance will drop by up to 50% if the Steelers get bumped to one of the late kickoff times.

OK, in fairness to this pastor, this seems to have been a prank.

He went on to conduct the full 1 hour service, or so he says.

See 5.

I found this after posting the above:

John, 18, shot a video of the pastor quickly blessing his congregation, then cutting short the second service while invoking the San Francisco 49ers-Carolina Panthers playoff game, which started at 11 a.m.

John posted the video on YouTube, intended only for the church faithful on the Gold Hill Lutheran Church website and Facebook page and maybe the Christensens’ personal Facebook pages.

What was meant to be an inside joke quickly became an overnight sensation as media outlets near and far hounded Christensen all day Monday with interview requests and permission to repost the video.

There are several thing I want to say as both a Christian and a Seahawks fan, but I’m fairly sure the Lord would frown rather deeply upon them all, even if they were meant in fun.

I’ll keep my mouth shut...THIS time.

“there’s some bread and some wine up here on the table. Feel free to help yourself if you’d like to.”

The 1 min sermon to catch a football game is awful. However the callous disregard for the elements of communion takes my anger to another level. If they don’t believe this stuff then why even bother with church at all?

God bless Pastor Tim.

I think Jesus's first sermon was pretty much that short.

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]

I think most Pastors talk so long most congregants feel like captives.

You do realize this was not an actual service - it was a prank video made for his church? (I think - from reading the article - journalists cannot write anymore!)

Too bad this was just a prank. I think the Church could learn a lot from Jesus's example as recorded in Luke 4:16

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f]
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

I'm shocked that an ELCA church mentioned forgiveness of sins.

Revealing a sport team shirt is so lame compared to Peter Muhlenberg, another Lutheran, who revealed his Continental uniform on announcing his enlistment for a very important cause.

He could have simply held services before or after the game. Why make a farce of it?

Are you sure? All it said was someone recorded this, and that a full service was administered AFTER the game!
