They likely feared the worst with regard to his health.
I don't recall my exact thoughts at the time, aside from deep and profound sadness to see him go. I don't remember thinking that he was deathly ill. I think, I thought that he was very tired and wanted to devote his remaining years to solemn prayer and hopefully, more writing.
>> “I thought Roman Catholics claimed to be Christians.” <<
.
Not honest ones.
>> “EITHER the Catholics are way too lenient and theologically liberal, claiming all religions are equally true, its fine and dandy to be a Muslim or an atheist and that and everyone is going to heaven” <<
.
When popes kiss the floors of mosques, what are we to believe?
Which Popes kissed the floor of mosques? Were they the same Popes that told all these protestant freepers that “only Catholics can get to heaven”?
“What really kills me is when protestant freepers.... “
Friend, you use “Protestant” as if it’s some monolithic lockstep force. It’s not. There is as much squabbling amongst differing Protestant groups as any two religious groups, heck, some versions of Baptists won’t be caught in the company of other Baptists.
Best to take the criticism for what it’s worth, usually it’s not much and leave the victim stuff behind.
You will note that post #62 on this thread is yet another example of a protestant freeper claiming his denomination is the only, one "true" Christian denomination, and Catholics "don't count" as Christians.
He also claims that the Catholic Church believes Islam is just as valid as Christianity and its fine and dandy to be Muslim.
Perhaps he and his fellow Catholic bashers who claim that the Catholic Church believes "everyone must become Catholic and ONLY Catholics can be saved" would like to debate, since they have OPPOSITE reasons they cite for why the Catholic Church is "wrong"
You'll also note that BillyBoy failed to ping the FReeper who posted #62.
“The only thing they all agree on is the Catholic Church is “wrong”. The reasons “why” vary greatly. “
That, my friend, is history. Protestantism is not without sincere foundation borne out of the politics of the time. But you knew that. I think the Catholic Church is much better off not being the political power center of the world as it once was. Protestants just rejected that part before Catholics did. There was no putting things back together - but doubting the sincerity of others beliefs is not the way to go.
“Thankfully, I’d be surprised if 10% of protestants believe the anti-Catholic propaganda they throw out there.”
I don’t think you should care what anyone else thinks about your religious beliefs. What is most important is that we tolerate each others religious beliefs like we are obligated as Americans to do.
Doesn’t mean we can’t argue and debate. The Catholic vs. Protestant Battle Royal is amusing, to be sure. I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all as long as it doesn’t get out of hand.
An involved ‘catholic’ would know the answer to that question.
I don’t care what Rush Limbaugh believes. Last time I checked he was the biggest George RINO Bush supporter the world has ever seen. Sarah Palin apologized for labeling Pope
Francis a liberal. Her many Catholics friends told her the opposite of what she hears from the braindead media.
For all those that think the College of Cardinals got it wrong in their election of Francis, I would remind you he was the runner-up to Benedict when Benedict was selected Pope. The Cardinals know Pope Francis and hell of better than we do.
So why is it that Catholics are criticized more than any other group?
Let me know when you have the answer! LOL!
“So why is it that Catholics are criticized more than any other group?”
I dunno, are they? Who’s keeping score? Like I said, I wouldn’t put much weight into what ill people say about others religions. In the end it’s the tolerance of other religions that matters in America.
To the subject of the article, it’s the intolerance of one’s religious choices that should be what bothers everyone.
Because the Catholic Church is the Rolls Royce of the Christian faith and all others are beat up Ford Fairmonts.
Just like Obama is the Rolls Royce of American presidents, yep.
That's not at all what I see in that post...
He also claims that the Catholic Church believes Islam is just as valid as Christianity and its fine and dandy to be Muslim.
That's what it appears to me as well...And well ahead of Protestants...
Perhaps he and his fellow Catholic bashers who claim that the Catholic Church believes "everyone must become Catholic and ONLY Catholics can be saved" would like to debate, since they have OPPOSITE reasons they cite for why the Catholic Church is "wrong"
What counts is, what does your religion think???
There have been numerous posts of documentation where your popes/magisterium in the past have claimed this exact same thing...Every negative thing we get against your religion comes from your religion...
Really? I guess you missed the part where he says "honest" Catholics don't claim to be Christian. So in his twisted world, a majority of the world's Christians "aren't Christian". Since Orthodox Christians believe the same "unbiblical" things that Catholics do, they "wouldn't be Christian" under his rules either. In others, anyone who claims to be Christian MUST be a Protestnat like him in order to "be a true Christian". Ironic that he's preaching the same you falsely accuse the Catholic Church of preaching -- that his form of Christianity is the ONLY "true" one on the planet.
>> What counts is, what does your religion think??? <<
Post #55 accurate sums up what the Catholic Church teaches about other faiths, and it's admitting from a lay person. Obviously he has reach the Catchecism of the Catholic Church and you have not.
>> Every negative thing we get against your religion comes from your religion.. <<
Yeah right, so when people claim the Catholic church "worships Mary as a goddess", they get from Catholics even though they can't find any Catholic teaching that ever made that statement. Maybe the "liberal marxist Pope" is hiding it some secret safe somewhere.
>> That's what it appears to me as well...And well ahead of Protestants... <<
If you are to smear Catholics, you're simply going to have pick one smear and go with it. Either:
1) The Catholic Church thinks all religions are equal and everyone can get into heaven and it doesn't matter what you believe.
OR
2) The Catholic Church thinks only the Catholic Church is the true faith and everyone must become Catholic to be saved.
Since these are completely opposite beliefs, I suggest you make up your mind which premise you're going to use to smear Catholics with. I hate to break the news to you, but its impossible to simultaneously believe only Catholics will be saved and all religions will be saved.
Didn't miss it...It's just that you added something that he didn't say...

I've been told by some of you guys that I couldn't possibly understand your catechism...I would need a Catholic interpreter...

Comes a time when you have to forget what the Catholics say and watch what they do...We see you guys worship Mary when you pray to her and ask her to preserve your soul, provide salvation for you, give you grace, etc...

2) The Catholic Church thinks only the Catholic Church is the true faith and everyone must become Catholic to be saved.
It's like I told you, we don't make that stuff up...We can only go by what your religion says or does...
Your religion flip-flopped on this salvation thing...It used to be that one had to become a Catholic to have a chance at salvation...Then, it switched to, Protestants can be saved under certain conditions...
Your new pope says you don't even have to be a Christian, or believe in Jesus Christ for that matter to get to heaven...And then he tell the muzlims to go read their Koran, they'll be fine... Hard to keep up with you guys...
If you look at the CURRENT make up of the U.S. Supreme Court, it IS a true statement that the court is "packed" with Roman Catholics:
John Roberts, (Chief Justice) Roman Catholic
Antonin Scalia, Roman Catholic
Anthony Kennedy, Roman Catholic
Clarence Thomas, Roman Catholic
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jewish
Stephen Breyer, Jewish
Samuel Alito, Roman Catholic
Sonia Sotomayor, Roman Catholic
Elena Kagan, Jewish
Of the nine justices, SIX are Roman Catholic (66%) and three are Jewish (33%). Not a Protestant among 'em. This isn't to say that this makes the court necessarily "dangerously" packed, since we have already seen some decisions passed down that have NOT been what Conservatives would have expected. The writer of the article is unnecessarily worried about something that will not happen simply because of a Catholic majority on the Supreme Court. I sincerely wish there WOULD be something for Liberals to worry about there, though.
