Steven D. Greydanus Reviews ‘Noah’(National Catholic Register)

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah pays its source material a rare compliment: It takes Genesis seriously as a landmark of world literature and ancient moral reflection, and a worthy source of artistic inspiration in our day.

It is not a “Bible movie” in the usual sense, with all the story beats predetermined by the text, and actors in ancient Near Eastern couture hitting their marks and saying all the expected things. It is something more vital, surprising and confounding: a work of art and imagination that makes this most familiar of tales strange and new: at times illuminating the text, at times stretching it to the breaking point, at times inviting cross-examination and critique.

Did anyone know who Mark Burnet and Roma Downey were, other than TV actors or producers. Protestants ate their movie “Son of God” up. It’s made over a 50 million dollars, and all it was was a copy and paste of the TV mini-series. People like Joel Osteen and Rick Warren bought out whole theaters and gave the tickets away so people could go see it.

No, I don’t think anyone outside of Hollywood knows who Burnett is, and Downey’s fan base from her “Touched by an Angel” days is not big enough by itself to make a hit movie. But “Son of God” didn’t have to make a fortune at the box office because, as you say, it was a cut and paste job. Almost every ticket sold so far ($50 million) is profit.

“Noah” is a different story. The original budget was $130 million. Since then, there have been reshoots and re-editing, plus new publicity campaigns. It cost around $180 million to get “Noah” in the theaters. That means it needs to make $400 million at the box office to get into black ink.

The tracking (and the audiences I’ve been watching the trailers with) say that figure is out of reach. “Noah” will be a write-down like last year’s “Lone Ranger.”

Roma Downey is a Roman Catholic, and the movie also seems to have been doing well with the audience she aimed it at, as well as with Protestant Christians.

“”Our friends at Saint Benedict Press/TAN will be releasing a coffee table book to coincide with the release of Roma Downey’s and Mark Burnett’s film Son of God which will be in theaters at the end of the month. The Son of God: The Life of Jesus Christ in Pictures seems aimed at a Catholic audience and includes a foreword by Roma Downey. “”

Haven’t you got the wrong newspaper there.

I always thought the National Catholic REPORTER was the Fishwrap and not truly Catholic in its approach to reporting.

Roma Downey is a nominal Catholic at best. The vast majority of the producers of the movie were protestant and the movie was geared towards protestants. There was hardly a mention of the Holy Eucharist in the movie. Anything that is promoted by Joel Osteen, Rick Warren and Oprah Windfry is not looking for a Catholic audience.

I don’t think you are the one who decides who is Catholic or not.

According to the Knight’s of Columbus, she was “”Raised Catholic, the Irish actress was educated by religious sisters. Her brother is a priest.””

Continuing with the Knights of Columbus
“The prominence of the character of Mary in the film will resonate with Catholic audiences. In fact, Son of God has received notable endorsements from prominent Catholics.

“It’s a joy to watch this film bring alive the pages of the Gospel,” said Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, D.C.

To prepare viewers for the film’s release, the Archdiocese of Washington has created a series of seven online catechetical videos linked to scenes in the movie. The videos complement the Son of God Reflection and Discussion Guide, written by Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield, associate general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.”

“Likewise, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles has said that the film is important “because it gives us the opportunity to realize God’s presence in our own lives, and that we are children of God. The film is extraordinary for my ministry.”

Burnett is particularly enthusiastic about the support from the Knights of Columbus, noting that many councils have pre-purchased theater tickets for parishes.”

“Downey is grateful that Catholic leaders can appreciate the vision behind the film. The project, she said, is “tied in with everything our new pope is speaking about — this new evangelization — and using all the new means we have to reach people with the message of Christ.”

Roma Downey is anything but a devout Catholic. She’s been married three times, never getting an annulment for any previous marriage. Her last marriage was held at her home in Hollywood and she was married by her co-star Della Reese.
Her and her protestant husband plugged this movie for protestants. Citing Wuerl is a laugh. He’s the most liberal bishop in the United States. Catholics had nothing to with producing the movie and Catholics were definitely not the targeted audience.

It appears that you have judged them all and are telling us your decision, is what I read, you must be something awesome to behold among those of the Catholic faith.
Cardinals, fellow Catholics, the Archdiocese of Washington, Archbishop José Gomez, even the Knights of Columbus are casually dismissed, swept aside.

“While evangelical Christians typically lead the charge in supporting faith-based movies, “Son of God” is a rare movie that has garnered the support of the Catholic Church, the film’s promoters said. Cardinal Donald Wuerl commissioned discussion guides and videos to be made for Catholic churches and schools, and Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami is doing a theater take-over for thousands of Catholics in Miami.”

“A TIMELESS GIFT.”
“Son of God is a timeless gift of cinema that calls upon people of every faith to stop and reflect on the eternal impact of Jesus Christ, and global impact of Christianity. With its rich production and timely release, Son of God is a wonderful ally in the New Evangelization. I encourage every Catholic to see this film, particularly on opening weekend.”
—Tom Peterson, Founder and President, Catholics Come Home, Inc.

“BRINGS THE BIBLE TO LIFE.”
“It brings to life the Bible in a visibly beautiful way. It is a wonderful tool for the new evangelization. I’d encourage you to go see the film, and also to take a friend with you.”
—Lisa Hendey, Author and Founder of Catholicmom.com

“EXPERIENCE JESUS IN A NEW WAY.”
“Unlike any film of the past decade, this Biblical epic brings Christ to life in dazzling ways. From the powerful acting, to the stunning visual effects, to the moving orchestral score of Hans Zimmer, you’ll experience the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in new and illuminating ways.”
—Brandon Vogt, Fr. Robert Barron’s Word on Fire Ministries

“BROUGHT LIFE TO THE SCRIPTURES.”
“As a Catholic in viewing the movie I was touched by so many scenes that brought to life what I already experienced interiorly through the Scriptures. However, I was particularly touched by the portrayal of the last supper. For me as a Catholic, it was extremely important that this episode be portrayed in its fullness. I am grateful for all who have worked on this movie.”
—Richard C Hanifen, Bishop Emeritus of Colorado Springs

““SON OF GOD WILL SPEAK TO YOUR HEART AND NOURISH YOUR SOUL.”
“Whether you have known Christ for many years, or you are looking to meet him for the first time, ‘Son of God’ is a movie that will speak to your heart and nourish your soul. This is a film that does not simply tell you about Christ, but puts you in the midst of his life, allowing you to see firsthand his public ministry, his love for humanity, and the death he suffered that we might have life eternal.”
—Carl Anderson, Knights of Columbus”

“Inspiring account of Christ.”
“I was impressed with the inspiration, quality and accuracy of the production. It is my prayerful hope that people of all faith traditions will go see this film and discuss and reflect upon the inspiring account of the life, love and sacrifice of Christ. As Catholics approach Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season, prayerful reflection regarding the life and sacrifices of Christ is of central importance. Viewing this inspiring film is a wonderful way to center our reflection as we enter this contemplative and holy period.”
—Bishop Kevin Vann, Diocese of Orange County, California

“Fantastic.”
“Son of God is fantastic. I really encourage you to go to your local theater and see it because it really brings the person of Jesus Christ so alive. It makes his humanness comes out in such a beautiful way and also the fact that he is the Son of God and how that was revealed to the people of his day and is still being revealed to us today. This is a way to re-connect with the person of Jesus. I hope you come to the theater and bring someone with you. It will be a great treat for yourself and a great way to begin the Lenten season.”
—Bishop David Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay

“Gripping and challenging.”
“Son of God is gripping and challenging. Powerful and gentle.”
—Bishop William F. Murphy, Diocese of Rockville Centre
“Energizes our faith.”
“It is my sincerest hope that this movie reminds all who watch of the love that Jesus Christ has for all of us, energizes our faith and leads us all to a deeper relationship with the Lord and once again remind us He is the Son of God.”
—Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki, Diocese of Milwaukee

“Remarkable.”
“It is a remarkable film, and I can for see many ways in which it could be used for our works of evangelization in our own time. Many people, especially our young people, are drawn to the visual in their lives, and this film is a superb use of modern filmmaking to capture the imaginations and the hearts of all.”
—His Eminence, Cardinal Roger M. Mahoney, Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles
“Powerful and beautiful”

“In SON OF GOD, through a cinematic recreation of events, we get to witness the sacrifices Jesus endured for our sins. The scenes of the movie, particularly of Our Lord’s Passion, bear a striking resemblance to the Stations of the Cross, and can be used as a way to meditate and reflect on His self-giving loving sacrifice for us during this season of Lent.”
—Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky

“ENGAGING AND COMPELLING.”
“The movie, Son of God, based on The Bible, the made-for-TV series, is an engaging and compelling presentation of the story of Jesus, the Son of God among us. It is a joy to watch this film bring alive the pages of the Gospel and help us see what those who lived at the time of Jesus experienced. Personally, I would recommend to individuals, but particularly to families this wonderful story of the Son of God in order to be inspired all over again with the story of God’s love for us.”
—Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, DC

“EXTRAORDINARY.”
“Each one of us is a son or daughter of God. It is a wonderful, awesome reality. The movie Son of God is a very important movie because it gives us the opportunity to realize God’s presence in our own lives, and that we are children of God. The film is extraordinary for my ministry.”
—Archbishop Jose Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles

It is my understanding that Mesopotamian agriculture was able to support a large population until the Mongol invasions of the Middle Ages, when a canal system capable of flushing the fields was destroyed.

I think it ironic that the film casts Peter as THE leader of the Church.
