Analyst: Vatican Regards Islamic State as Waging a 'War of Religion'

Vatican City, Sep 4, 2014 / 04:08 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- According to prominent Vatican analyst Sandro Magister, the Holy See views the aggression of the Islamic State as a religious war, and believes that international action taken so far is inadequate.

In a Sept. 4 post on his Settimo Cielo blog at l'Espresso, Magister made note of an editorial which appeared in the most recent issue of La Civiltà Cattolica, the Jesuits' Italian-language cultural review.

“Obviously, to promote peace it is necessary to know what the war truly is, and not what one would like it to be. It is crucial to study and to comprehend why and how the Islamic State fights. Theirs is a war of religion and of annihilation,” reads the editorial penned by Fr. Luciano Larivera, S.J.

The article continues, “It should not be confused or reduced to other forms, such as the Bolsheviks or the Khmer Rouge. They instrumentalize the power of religion, and not vice versa. Their danger is greater than that of al-Qaeda.”

Magister posited that La Civiltà's editorial represents in fact the stance of the Holy See.

It’s not the Islamic State; it’s just Islam.

Too bad the Roman church is busily inviting these very butchers into its sanctuaries.

I this he doth err.

A religion heads people towards God, It doesn’t behead them.

Islam is not a religion.

Islam is a satanic murderous cult that glorifies paedophilia, sexual deviants, bestiality and every unclean lust of the flesh.

Well I totally agree with them, but Kerry said they are a religion of peace.

As a Catholic I rejoice in the realistic attitude this article is presenting regarding the true nature of Islamic terrorists.

I do criticize the RC church and other Christians (Protestants and Orthodox) who have allowed the secularists to define the Crusades as Christian aggression - when they were exactly the opposite.

It is time we take back the narrative and insist on truth telling to the masses.

I not a Catholic, and I appreciate any condemnation of these terrorists, but they are still falsely distinguishing between some adherents and the false religion itself. Too little; too late.

No matter what the Islamists say or what Westerners want to believe, there are only 3 options for infidels: conversion, slavery, or annihilation.

In such cases a good Pope can work with an American President and a British Prime Minister to right the path.
Sorry, reminiscing to a better time.

What??? A war because of religion? Really? Has that ever happened before?

What a silly attempt at an absurd comparison.

The answer?

Yes, it has happened before, but only once, for 1400 years, extending to our own lifetimes.

Are you by any chance muslim?

Did someone say crusade?

I got me a sword. I will paint a Red Cross on the front.

When do we leave. Are we walking? Or do we get horses? I like horses.

What do you expect the Vatican to do about it? Bang some heads together?

As much as John Paul was able to do by way of prayer and inspirational example, he still needed Ronald Reagan to provide the muscle of action.

We are having these problems with the Islamic state because of Obama's negligence.

And he has no reason interfere with people whose religion he shares.

“The worldwide Islamic community has a duty to destroy in the heart of all Muslims an extremist conception of the conception of the Quran and of Islamic tradition.”

Bzzzt. Wrong answer. The worldwide Islamic community needs to convert to the Catholic Faith and recant the false and diabolical religion of Islam.

You've written what I was thinking. On the one hand people on this forum condemn the Pope for trying to talk to these thugs and then on the other hand they condemn him for not doing anything. He's doing what he can. He's using his platform. But like you said. Without an American President to provide the muscle.....
