Army picks MultiCam as new camo for Afghanistan

BAMBERG, Germany — The Army has selected the MultiCam as its new uniform for soldiers heading to Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced, following four months of testing by units in the combat zone.

MultiCams will be issued to units heading to Afghanistan starting in July. Those units include the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Polk, La.; the 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo.; and the 2nd Brigade, 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa Army National Guard, according to the Program Executive Office Soldier Web site.

Soldiers in Afghanistan had identified the need for a new combat uniform, according to Col. Scott Mills of the Army Logistics Directorate, who spoke to Stars and Stripes about the uniforms in December when they started testing them.

Some of the functional design changes look very well-considered, too.
Our brave troops around the globe deserve the best equipment possible.

I’ll have nightmares tonight after seeing camos. I used to have to wash, starch, and iron the old ones for my husband. I hated them!!!!

Now that's funny right there!

We seemingly change combat unifroms every time we swap out the Command Sergeant Major of the Army....

This one will be tossed in a few years as well. The burden goes to the troops, who have to buy all new uniforms every time the pentagon feels a breeze...

Plain Stupid.

Any uniform pattern will be less than ideal-all we need is a good design (meaning cut, pockets where they make sense and proper material-like flame/blast resistant yet cool enough to be reasonable) who cares what “color and camo pattern” they are for the most part.

Agreed the changes are insane in the military now.

I work in a unit that has been wearing these multicams for years now. They are FAR superior in color pattern and serviceability.

I was watching an Army-Navy game a few years ago on TV and when the camera panned the stands from one of the ends of the field. It looked as though a good chunk of the bleachers had no people in them. I felt sorry for the football players because this was their big game and it looked like a third of the stadium had no people in the seats.

Then they did a close up of what I thought were empty seats, only to realize that the stadium was indeed filled with soldiers wearing camo.

My daughter, wife, and I drive through Crystal City (near the Pentagon) every morning on the way to work and school. One morning, my wife commented that she didn’t recall seeing so many soldiers before. (It was after 9/11). My precious 8 year old immediately said, “that’s because they’re all wearing camouflage mommy.” It was a proud moment for me.

Looks like something the Waffen SS came up with.

Do not like.

Starch?

Starch makes clothing light up like a glow bug with active night vision.

Damn, now I’m going to have to repaint my truck. I wonder where I can find a can of MultiCam paint?

Orange County Chopper showed a guy who can apply a camo finish to anything metal using a dipping tank.

Would the military feel the same about changing patterns so often if they provided all uniforms for service men and women?
