Army picks MultiCam as new camo for Afghanistan

BAMBERG, Germany — The Army has selected the MultiCam as its new uniform for soldiers heading to Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced, following four months of testing by units in the combat zone.

MultiCams will be issued to units heading to Afghanistan starting in July. Those units include the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Polk, La.; the 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo.; and the 2nd Brigade, 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa Army National Guard, according to the Program Executive Office Soldier Web site.

Soldiers in Afghanistan had identified the need for a new combat uniform, according to Col. Scott Mills of the Army Logistics Directorate, who spoke to Stars and Stripes about the uniforms in December when they started testing them.

They provide initial issue at boot camp and sometimes before deployments, then it becomes the member responsibility to buy replacements using the yearly individual uniform allowance.

Looks like something the Waffen SS came up with.
Do not like.

Hey The KG9 Kid what was your response to the Kevlar helmet?

Does that “allowance” generally cover the full cost?

Has any one seen the new Navy camos?

If they use them on board ships and fall off I sure hope they have dye packs, strobes, and an ELT because they will never be found without them.

Lets not even get into the new uniforms my Air Force has. Ugh!

Not even close. The wash and wear helped a little since we no longer were required to starch/press garrison uniforms.

It’s not as pretty as Mossy Oak or Realtree, though.

During Desert Storm I wore khakis on the deck of a gray painted merchant ship. Ok at sea but when docked in a questionable desert sea port I wished for simple janitor work gray.

Honey, back then they didn’t have night vision. When he was in the Corps, they were using stuff left over from Korea. He was an air traffic controller, which now is done by computers. They loved to say they told pilots where to go.

My Marine friends think the Navy went with digitals to hide grease spots. Otherwise, the old Woodland and Desert patterns seemed to be fine on ship.

Desert MARPAT (USMC digital camo) isn’t all that great since it can fade a lot after washing and wearing. However, my Marine friends liked the elasticated cargo pockets and waist on the trousers and the angled chest pockets on the blouse.

The MultiCam pattern is available commercially and seems to have more brown than the above photo. It blends well at a distance according to a couple of Rocky Mountain sheep hunters I know who wore the pattern last season.
