1905 Max Schmeling Germany, world heavyweight boxing champ (1930-32)

Today Berlin has a Stadium named after Max Schmeling. Who was Max Schmeling? He was since 1930 German heavy-weight box-champion. He was the first European boxer of the 20th century to win this title. He was the idol of the younger generation of his time. However, Max Schmeling did not feather his nest by trying to serve in the rear lines. During the Battle for the conquest of Crete he was dropped on the island as paratrooper, he was wounded and nursed at the Zappion Megaron in Athens, which the Germans has turned to a military Hospital. After the War he returned to boxing in 1947 and won further fights. It has been maintained (see the 1998 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica at the lemma Max Schmeling), that Max Schmeling was sent to the front line, because he had fallen out of favour with the Nationalsocialistic Party. This view is checked as false, because in that bloodiest for the Germans Battle, yet another much better connected parachutist was dropped on the island. He was the stepson of Joseph Goebbels, the closest and most entrusted to the very end associate and friend of Hitler, whom he appointed in his will as his successor. It is certain that this paratrooper could have avoided serving in the front line, had he wanted to.

OKers.
Back then, burning our flag was an act of war.
Now, people do it all the time.
Back then, speaking abusively against our leaders from foreign soil was treason, and a nation slandering our leaders was an act of war.
Now, such things are given a pass.
Back then honor, dignity, and 'the right thing to do' was more important than being 'sensitive' and 'not offending' anyone.
Now one must be mindful of the rights and feelings of extreme wackos who want to give gophers the right to free speech.
Back then, when a US soldier commited a crime on foreign soil, he was brought back to the US for trial and, if convicted, sat in a dark basement suite in Levinworth.
Now we put our soldiers under the rules and dictates of foreign laws that, in some cases, are contrary to the rules our soldiers must follow.
This last one is an ugly precedent to set, because once you put a soldier under penalty of foreign laws, you deny him the rights his uniform represents and basically reject him from his country.
A US soldier is, still, US property according to UCMJ.
The precedent for that is this, when you attempt suicide in the military, you get nailed for attempting to destroy US property.

Mind spinning.
And all I hear is an intense.. humming.
*Slapping side of self's head*
Get.. out.. of.. there! Get.. out.. of .. there!

Yes.
Now adays national pride, formerly known as nationalism, is a 'dirty word'.
It was listed as the supposed root cause for World Wars One and Two.
And since WWII, national pride has been 'bred out' of us.
More like beat out of us, but that in and of itself is a whole story.
And yes, the thinking in 1914 was even vastly differnt from what it was in 1861.
Wonder what people 80 years from now will say about us?

I don't know but I have the feeling it'll be said in Spanish.

lol

Get out of here you nasty little gnome,
go to you house, is it a home?
My head is not a resting place
for nutty gnomes or trolls in haste.
So take thy heels and get thee out
look out for the warty trout.

Thanks.
I think the humming was a Barry Manilow tune.
It's gone now.

Morning friends. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday.

The Aftermath of War

The war is over (so they say).
So why do troops still die?
The death toll's mounting day by day
and critics wonder "why?"
"Why did we go to war?" they ask.
"Why can't we find Hussein?"
"Why can't we find those missing nukes?"
"Why not in heaven's name?"
"Why can't our soldiers leave Iraq?"
"Why must they linger there?"
"Why doesn't Bush say 'That's enough'?"
"Why can't he seem to care?"
But, maybe those who criticize
should understand the score.
What's going on is not a game.
It's gruesome, bloody war.
There are no halves or innings.
There are no rules or refs.
And unlike golf there is no prize
when there is sudden death.
In some ways it's like Calvary
when Christ defeated sin.
Our foe was wounded and he'll die
and when he does, we'll win.
But in the meantime we're on guard
for mines and sneak attacks.
Our victory is guaranteed,
but we must watch our backs.

Good afternoon Victoria. Interesting poem today. I like this part.

But in the meantime we're on guard
for mines and sneak attacks.
Our victory is guaranteed,
but we must watch our backs.
