Daschle wins struggle over judicial nominations

Senate Republicans abandoned their strategy of holding up spending bills to force more judicial confirmations after Mr. Daschle told the president in a White House meeting he would not budge on the issue.

"There isn't leverage on appropriations bills," Mr. Daschle said later. "I told that again to the president."

Well, if we can't get the little guys approved, with all the support the administration currently has, I don't hold much of a chance of influencing the Supreme court if new appointees are required.

This is what I have come to expect from the same people who tried to throw out the votes of men and women who defend their freedoms.

It means doing it their way or else.

Here's how yesterday went between the Republicans and the Democrats:

Republican wins: a signal that drilling in ANWAR will be passed by the Senate late this year or early next year ( via a Reuters story published on FR earlier today); probable delay of a new Farm Bill until spring despite Daschle wanting one sooner

Democrat wins: appropriations process un-blocked by Senate Republicans; judges continue to be held up

In D.C., it's all about deals. Ugly, but true.

After nominating three Democrats all three US Attorney positions in Illinois, maybe no staff is what Fitzgerald needs...other than a new job.

My strategy:

Bush: "Well Tom I think it is unfortunate that you would not even allow a vote on these nominees, and here's what I am going to do. First, when the senate adjourns I am going to make many recess appointments. Second, I am going to start actively campaigning for Republican senatorial candidates. When we take back the senate next year, I am going to make all of the recess appointments permanent appointments. And finally, I am going to go to the American people and explain all of the little partisan tricks that you and your colleagues in the senate have been pulling and tell the American people how this hurts the war effort. Now, do you really want to mess with me?"

No fire in the belly. Daschle has shown time and time again that he cares nothing for protocol, honesty and honor - yet Bush doesn't send out Cheney or Ari to call him on the carpet. You know damn well that war or no war Daschle will do whatever it takes to hanstring the administration.

I for one am sick of the administration treating Daschle like a mother who always gives into a spoiled child.

Add to that a nice little prime-time speech where the President says, "we have over 100 suspected terrorists in custody and under arrest, but due to a lack of judges we are unable to put any of them on trial and under our Constitution we are going to have to release them. We are sending them all to Sioux Falls in the morning."

I say it is time for a new Majority Leader. It is time to put the squeeze on Zell Miller to switch parties. We need a Unity Government now more than ever, and we cannot wait until January 2003. Tiny Tom and Hitlery will have done far too much damage to the war effort and the economy by that time! ZELL MUST SWITCH NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And just how are you going to do that if the GOP is not willing to investigate and prosecute some of the crimes committed by the Clintons and DNC the last 9 years? Exhume Ron Brown's body and prove he was murdered and you'd see creeps like Daschle falling all over themselves to get out of the way. But thinking that you are going to retake the Senate with the democRATS controlling the media is wishful thinking. Even if Bush wins this war against terrorism in dramatic fashion, it won't do the GOP any good (look at how quickly Bush Sr's star faded and he SMASHED Iraq in record time). More likely, this war is going to take YEARS and there are going to be many more civilian and military casualties, and we will have to do many things that may appall some people. There are likely to be many more restrictions on what democRATS perceive as rights or freedoms. That is not likely to win over democRAT votes or, for that matter, make Republicans more likely to go out and vote. I can think of only one thing that will do that ... prove democRAT complicity in treason and murder and election tampering and sundry other crimes.
