Daschle wins struggle over judicial nominations

Senate Republicans abandoned their strategy of holding up spending bills to force more judicial confirmations after Mr. Daschle told the president in a White House meeting he would not budge on the issue.

"There isn't leverage on appropriations bills," Mr. Daschle said later. "I told that again to the president."

I agree. Bush doesn't strike me as someone who will tolerate games like holding up nominations. If Lott thought he looked surprised my guess is he looked angry but was trying to hide it.

Bush probably accepted that the Dems were not going to compromise and continue to be obstructive and knows that his only course is to fight.

The last thing I would want to be is on the receiving end of a determined shrub.

Sen Nickles announced two judicial appointments for OK that were approved yesterday! So it seems that daschle caved on those. Would check with some other states to see if they got some judicial appointments also through the Senate yesterday. Why is everyone always so quick to say the GOP caved -- since when do we believe all the media has to say?

My take is that if OK got two judges approved yesterday then something must have happened!

We've been saying that for several years..you and I......Lott has got to go....but who will take his place.....I like Nichols....but don't think he's an effective communicator..think he's better as a #2....a la DeLay in the House.....Inhofe is a possibility..it's got to come from the south...that's the core of GOP strength.....a long shot..Kay Bailey from Texas......or the other senator from Mississippi..Thad Cochran....but that would really be a "bitch-slap" to Lott.....actually...the more I think about it.....it could be Shelby...for the simple reason that showing that a former Dem can rise to the top of the GOP in the Senate might just be enough to get Sen Miller from Ga to cross the aisle.....

Could be that Nichols announced the 2 judges because he agreed to vote the way Daschle wanted a vote on something down the road.

I do know I heard Nichols before 911 saying we should be spending more.....I was shocked because I thought on Demon Domenici thought and talked out loud about spending more--surplus or no surplus!

It's time for Bush to hold the Democreeps' pet constituencies hostage - as in no aid to Israel, no "urban aid," no National Endowment for the Arts, no National Public Radio - until all appointees are confirmed.

Bush has nothing to lose among these constituencies, anyhow; exit polls show he cannot win less of them in 2004 than in 2000 - because he got near-zero then.
