Law schools can be independent of Universities. Here is their website. Appalachian School Of Law

If you are dedicated to pursuing a career in law, then consider the Appalachian School of Law. We offer opportunities that you will not find at many other law schools: an outstanding faculty that is also accessible, a diverse student population where you will feel comfortable, a traditional legal curriculum with practical skills training, a location that is unmatched in community support and natural beauty, and a dedication to individual success.

No - there are some law schools that are just law schools. It looks like that might be the case here. It also seems to be brand new:

From the web page: "THE APPALACHIAN SCHOOL OF LAW HAS BEEN GRANTED PROVISIONAL ACCREDITATION BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION."

from the Wash Post...

Among the dead was Anthony Sutton, dean of the school established in 1997, said Ellen Qualls, spokeswoman for Gov. Mark Warner, a former member of the school’s board. Also killed were a student and another member of the faculty, she said.

State police believe students apprehended the shooter, who is now in custody, Qualls said.

I hope this isn't a joke, because if it is, I know the punch-line.

"A good start"

It's not a joke. Dead students aren't jokes. I will find out the address for the parents and you can tell them your funny jokes.

The school opened in 1997 because there were not enough attorneys in the are to handle Coal Mining cases. They graduated their first class in 2000. They had 34 graduated. The school has 197 students.

According the MSNBC, the shooter is a foreign exchange student who was unhappy about the grades he was receiving. So, I guess he decided to get some revenge on the dean and other students. Sad.

(AP) — A gunman killed three people and wounded three others during a shooting spree Wednesday at the Appalachian School of Law, officials said. Among the dead was the dean, Anthony Sutin, said Ellen Qualls, spokeswoman for Gov. Mark Warner. She said a student and another member of the faculty were also killed. She said the weapon was a .380 semiautomatic handgun. A man who answered the phone at the law school refused to comment.
