Jeesh. Have times changed or what. When I got a bad grade in college (which was very rare by the way), I asked to do some additional work for extra credit to help boost the lousey mark....

The law school is just up the road from me, maybe an hour or so. I am on the TN-VA border, in northeast Tennessee. The school is in the southwest corner of Virginia. Around here, it has a decent reputation, for a fairly new, small school.

Grundy, VA is in southwestern Virginia, in Buchannon county, which is the county that borders both KY and WV. That area is where I grew up.

(01-16) 11:46 PST GRUNDY, Va. (AP) -- A gunman killed three people and wounded three others during a shooting spree Wednesday at a tiny law school in the Appalachian foothills, officials said.

The slain included a student, a faculty member and the dean of the Appalachian School of Law, L. Anthony Sutin, said Ellen Qualls, spokeswoman for Gov. Mark Warner. The governor is a former member of the school's board.

State police believe students apprehended the suspect, Qualls said. Details were not immediately available, though Qualls said the weapon was a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

Three students were wounded and taken to Buchanan General Hospital, Qualls said.

The law school, with an enrollment of about 170 students, opened in 1997 in a renovated junior high school in this small town 120 miles west of Roanoke.

The school was opened with the hope of easing a historic shortage of lawyers in the coalfields of southwest Virginia, as well as help change the region's image and foster renewal in Appalachia. It graduated its first class of 34 in 2000.

The school has about 15 faculty members, including alumni of law schools at the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia, Harvard and Howard universities.

This has nothing to do with this incident, but I hate lawyers.

Dean Anthony Sutin was a former U.S. Assistant Attorney General.

So, it's a foreign exchange student. Is it possible he was here on a student visa? Maybe when he got his grades, he realized they were going to kick him out. This would have revoked his visa.

The gun-banners are putting on their dancing shoes and dusting off their 'gun show loophole' speeches.

She said the weapon was a .380 semiautomatic handgun.

Notice the media ALWAYS inserts the word "semiautomatic". Aren't most handguns semiautomatic??

foreigners in the US do not have gun ownership rights. what the hell is this suspect doing with the piece? All we need now is for him to be from a certain region of the world that is on all of our minds these days.....

"The shooting happened after the posting of some grades. The shooter is reported to be a foreign exchange student."

Good grief.

Of course in Chapel Hill, NC, a few years ago a guy with a rifle shot and killed several people right down the main street of that University - and then pleaded insanity - and got off - scott free. (if memory serves).

Sorry for the school people now dead - hope this perp gets justice.

Y'know... that was a rash, silly thing to do. Dead people are NOTHING to kid about. My heartfelt sympathies go out to their families.

Actually, aren't the vast majority of .380's revolvers?

Natural reaction after all the knee-jerk reactions that we've had to endure from the media and the gun-control groups after horrible crimes like this are committed.

Anybody got information on where the murderer was from?

It's either semi-auto or a revolver.
